While fully respecting the brand heritage, conveying unlimited passion and dedication to perfection, the new car opens a new chapter of Ferrari's unremitting innovation.
As an innovative version of the Portofino, the Portofino M is equipped with a wealth of innovative technologies, the most prominent of which is the re-tuned powertrain, the new 8-speed transmission and the manettino knob that offers five modes such as the "Race". This is also the first time that the Ferrari brand has applied this advanced technology to its GT Spider models. A range of cutting-edge technology applications help the new car to perfectly combine pure GT sports car performance, passionate driving pleasure, excellent response speed and everyday driving practicality.
As the latest design and engineering masterpiece of the Ferrari brand, the new car highlights the perfect evolution of the Ferrari Portofino model. Compared to its predecessors, the new car has a more distinctive sporty character and an extraordinary handling experience. With a series of new options such as Ferrari Advanced Driving Assistant Systems and ventilated/heated seats, the new car will further enhance driving comfort.
The Ferrari Portofino M perfectly inherits the characteristics of the Portofino: when the convertible is closed, it is an authentic hard-top sports car; when the hardtop is opened, the car takes on the pure character of a roadster. It is thanks to the foldable hardtop convertible (RHT), a classic design of ferrari convertibles, that the new Portofino M is the benchmark model for the market to perfectly combine the two. The compact and condensed body design makes the new car suitable for any road condition. With its unrivalled versatility and exceptional ride comfort, Portofino M turns every journey into a whole new journey of discovery.
dynamical system
The Ferrari Portofino M's 3855 c.c engine is based on Ferrari's award-winning V8 turbocharged engine family, which has won the "International Engine of the Year Award" for four consecutive years (2016-2019). The new engine has been upgraded to produce up to 620 cv at 7500 rpm, 20 cv more than the Ferrari Portofino.1 To achieve this performance, Ferrari engineers used a new cam contour design that increased valve lift while optimizing the filling rate of fuel and air in the combustion chamber. The turbocharger assembly also introduced a speed sensor for measuring turbine speed, increasing the measurable maximum speed by 5,000 rpm.
In addition, to comply with the most stringent emission regulations, the exhaust system is equipped with a gasoline particulate screening program (GPF), which ensures that the model meets the most stringent European 6D Pollution Control Emission Standard (Euro-6D) while providing uncompromising driving pleasure. The sophisticated logic control unit continuously refreshes the screening program to effectively control the accumulation of particulate matter. This is mainly due to the fact that two proprietary sensors mounted on each cylinder block accurately measure the pressure difference between the upstream and downstream of the gasoline pellet screening program.
The new car is equipped with a new 8-speed transmission, which is a wet dual-clutch structure compared to the previous 7-speed transmission. Compared to the SF90 Stradale's 8-speed gearbox, the gear ratio is longer and it provides mechanical reverse gear. Thanks to the rational layout and component design, the size and installation of the gearbox have been fully optimized.
Like other Ferrari sports cars with turbocharged engines, the Ferrari Portofino M perfectly demonstrates the "zero turbo lag" concept, which delivers transient power responses across the entire rev range. Ferrari Portofino M is also equipped with Variable Boost Management. Developed in-house by Ferrari, this engine management software adjusts the torque output accordingly to the selected gear. Thanks to this, the model can achieve more powerful performance with the increase of rotational speed, while greatly optimizing fuel consumption. With the increase in gear (from 3 to 8), the maximum torque can be increased to 760 Nm in 7 and 8 gears.
On the one hand, the new car has a greater transmission ratio at high gears, which effectively reduces fuel consumption and emissions; on the other hand, when switching to low gears, it can temporarily form a torque curve in the speed range, bringing a smooth and powerful acceleration experience. Through the addition of the 8th gear and the optimization of transmission efficiency, the fuel consumption of the new car in urban roads and high-speed driving conditions has been significantly reduced, while bringing a better performance experience in sports and extreme driving conditions. The new car features a new clutch module that reduces size by 20 percent, while torque output increases by up to 35 percent and transmits dynamic torques of up to 1200 Nm during shift operations. Thanks to the more functional electronic control unit, the software performance of the gearbox is further improved.
Ferrari also employs a range of shift strategies designed to optimize fuel consumption and emissions performance in the powertrain. With more effective clutch torque control, the new car can provide a more relaxed driving experience in urban conditions and start-and-stop situations. At low speeds, the new car ensures a smoother driving experience while ensuring more intuitive driver feedback and faster response speed, and enables 0-100 km/h acceleration to perform at 3.45 seconds (only 0.05 seconds slower than Roma).
True to Ferrari's tradition, each engine has a unique and captivating sound. Of course, Portofino M is no exception. In addition to the planar crankshaft, the geometry of the complete exhaust pipe has been completely redesigned. At the same time, the new car also eliminated two rear silencers (in addition to enhancing the sound wave, but also significantly reduced the back pressure in the exhaust pipe), and the bypass valve adopted a new elliptical design to optimize exhaust noise. These two design upgrades significantly reduce exhaust back pressure and improve sound quality. Finally, it is worth mentioning that depending on the driving situation, the new car can achieve continuous and gradual control of the bypass valve.
Dynamic performance
Ferrari Portofino M is equipped with a vehicle dynamic control system called The Slip Angle Control (SSC), which transmits real-time estimated slip angle information to all on-board control systems thanks to advanced algorithms. Given that all systems use common data, the Side Slip Angle Control System (SSC) can work with these systems to intervene in the dynamic performance of the vehicle.
Version 6.0 of the Sliding Angle Control System (SSC) incorporates advanced technologies such as electronic differential (E-Diff), F1-TCS, SCM-E Frs and Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer. Ferrari Dynamic Reinforcement (FDE) is a transverse dynamic control system that utilizes Ferrari software to regulate the hydraulic braking pressure acting on each wheel brake caliper. On the Ferrari Portofino M model, the system is only enabled in manettino knob set to "Race" mode. When the vehicle is cornering and exiting, it ensures that the driver can more easily and intuitively control the steering wheel and accelerator pedals, while giving the vehicle more predictable and controllable side-slip dynamic performance. This suggests that the Ferrari Dynamic Reinforcement System (FDE) does not replace the traditional Vehicle Dynamics Control System (VDC) and Stability Control System (ESC), but rather provides them with assistance.
It is also worth noting that the brake pedal pressure of the new car is adjustable, supplemented by a reduction of about 10% of the pedal distance, which allows for a more precise transient response during braking.
As the first to introduce the Ferrari GT Spider model, the five-mode manettino knob has added a "Race" mode, further enriching the options and giving the Ferrari Portofino M an easy handling experience and easy-to-control grip performance. With the support of the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancement System (FDE), the mode is designed to bring the ultimate driving pleasure.
Here are the five modes offered by the Ferrari Portofino M's manettino knob and the performance purpose it pursues:
devise
The beautiful and harmonious styling of the new Ferrari Portofino M is derived from a global design concept that combines complexity and is based on the successful Portofino model. The body design also applies this design concept, and the front face, wings and rear of the car together create a sculptural appearance. The cockpit design of the new car also continues this design concept, and the overall layout and contour lines are in line with the style. This design concept makes the exterior and interior design of the new car mirror each other.
appearance
Compared to the Portofino, the Ferrari Portofino M is more powerful, thanks to the very precise and targeted optimization of the designers at the Ferrari Design Center, which enhances the extraordinary athletic performance while highlighting its personality.
The front bumper has a wrap-around design with sharp three-dimensional air intakes, giving the front of the car a sharp shape. A new ventilation hole has been added to the top of the wheel arch to reduce the air resistance of the entire vehicle. Part of the air flow from the front radiator is directed to the new vents and accelerates as it leaves to increase its ability to suck up airflow, which in turn improves the vehicle's aerodynamics. In addition, the openings in the front bumper blend perfectly into the wings, not only highlighting their excellent aerodynamics, but also enhancing the harmonious aesthetic of the side profiles. The front bumper of the Ferrari Portofino M also features the portofino model's signature side fan design, highlighting the car's sporty silhouette.
The new grille features a new aluminium trim, and the facet workmanship at both ends shows a sharp contrasting effect, showing the noble style of this high-end material. In addition to removing the silencer, a new exhaust system was introduced at the rear, giving the Ferrari Portofino M a more compact tail design. Not only that, but the rear bumper design is also more condensed and more sculptural. The contour lines look more agile, the shape is more consistent with the front bumper, and the harmonious beauty of the whole vehicle is comprehensively enhanced.
The rear diffuser has been redesigned to completely separate from the bumper. This design allows Ferrari customers to customize the carbon fiber rear diffuser to further enhance the sporty look of the vehicle. The designer team also tailored the diamond-cut rims for Ferrari Portofino M, which cleverly borrowed from the design of the flanks to achieve a perfect design that combines movement and elegance. The spokes, on the other hand, feature an unusually sculptural design that creates a chiaroscuro visual effect that adds sparkle to the rims.
Interior
When the convertible opens, the Ferrari Portofino M embodies the stylish essence of the GT sports car, where drivers and occupants can enjoy the car's extraordinary sense of compactness and harmony. In fact, the interior development of new cars also follows a harmonious design style. From the outset, the design team at ferrari Design Center identified the conditions necessary for a successful model design, the most important of which was that the exterior and interior were designed and functionally consistent, reducing weight while providing the occupants with better interior space.
In terms of interior design, the design team first created a multi-layer instrument cluster structure composed of upper, middle and lower layers, and the middle gap was designed to reduce the load carrying weight of the lower layer.
The size of the dashboard does not increase but decreases, presenting a very layered functional design, helping the designer team to rationally layout the technical elements and on-board equipment, and interpreting the iconic through-line overall architecture. The central-level aluminium "blade" design divides the dashboard, air-conditioning vents and passenger display into three separate exclusive areas on the upper level. The lower recessed space features controls with a 10.25-inch touch screen in the center. Based on this layout, high-tech elements and materials and ingenuity create exquisite elements and decorations that present a naturally harmonious aesthetic, highlighting the ideal ergonomic design and exquisite architectural details.
Viewed from a flat point of view, the symmetrical layout of the cockpit and the wide rear seats are clear at a glance. From a construction point of view, the interior and instrument cluster architecture use double housing for technological configuration integration, and the slender bridge design allows the instrument area to seamlessly connect with the central panel. The layout is designed to increase passenger engagement, as evidenced by door trims, door handles, and design details of controls including a central touch screen and a passenger-only touch screen. The R&D team also created a special seat for the model, using an innovative magnesium architecture. The differentiated density pad design and ultra-slim backrest shape provide more space for the rear.
In addition, the seat and backrest offer three levels of adjustable ventilation, and the popular neck heating feature keeps passengers warm and comfortable during the colder winter months. The neck heating function has a choice of three heating modes, which adjust the heating speed blowing from the headrest accordingly based on driving speed, outside air temperature and foldable open-top position.
Infotainment and human-computer interaction interface
Ferrari Portofino M's Human-Machine Interface digital instrument panel features dual TFT display screens and a central analogue tachometer, equipped with an atmospheric circular anti-glare protective cover. Digital dashboards are coaxial with a multi-function steering wheel for easier and more intuitive human-vehicle interaction through ideal driving feedback, while combining visual aesthetics with a user-friendly operating experience.
A touch screen in the center of the dashboard provides easy control of the infotainment system, within easy reach of both drivers and passengers. In order to operate and view information as efficiently and quickly as possible, the system is also equipped with a Full HD capacitive multi-touch display screen with Split View function, which can display richer content at the same time. In addition, the system also supports Apple Car Play and Android Auto functions.
At the same time, the dashboard is also equipped with an optional passenger-only capacitive display screen, which is directly interconnected with the main screen, which can provide real-time information such as driving speed, engine speed and gear position. In addition, the 7-inch Full HD and Full Touch color display enables passengers to fully interact with the in-vehicle system, easily selecting songs, streaming satellite navigation information and selecting new points of interest (e.g. restaurants) and automatically adding them to preset routes. In this way, passengers act as if they are navigators, sharing control and galloping fun.
