Although this cooperation has not yet been finalized, it is basically confirmed that Sony PS VR2 and a number of eye-tracking technology suppliers are negotiating, of course, the current international mainstream is Tobii (patents are also a factor), especially this consumer electronics products for global sales.
At the same time, according to RoadtoVR news, it found news about Fresnel lenses from Sony's published patents, indicating or adopting a new generation of Fresnel lenses.
Although Fresnel lenses have been applied to mainstream VR devices at present, and because of the advantages of thin and light, there are also some problems, such as: Godrays and so on. In this regard, including Meta, it is also being studied to inhibit the Godrays of Fresnel lenses.
It is reported that Sony's new patent mentions: a Fresnel lens manufacturing method that can reduce Godrays, proposing a design that reduces Godrays by increasing the "absorbed light" design, as shown in the "12" area in Figure 3.
It is also mentioned in other patents that lenses are made from materials that absorb light.
Of course, these are only the patent stages, and the specific product implementation has yet to be verified. Because Sony PS VR2 has confirmed the use of conventional size OLED screen, it is likely to follow the single lens scheme (the official website has also revealed that it will use Fresnel lens), which will not be as complex as the multi-piece combination of short throw modules, so the actual experience is also worth looking forward to.
