This small island with an area of less than 1 square kilometer used to be a desert island with "coral reefs everywhere and birds not landing". The officers and men guarding the island take the island as their home and constantly improve the ecological environment of the island. At present, there are more than 100,000 tropical plants in more than 260 kinds on the island, and the vegetation coverage rate is 90%. The island became a "beautiful island".
Recently, the superior sent 4 "gift packages" to the company: photovoltaic power generation expansion equipment, wet garbage processors, waterless washing machines, green energy supply modules, and the "beautiful island" was upgraded to an "ecological island".
In the past, the island has been using diesel engines to generate electricity, and if the generator fails, or the oil supply is not timely, power outages occur from time to time. A few years ago, the island started the construction of solar photovoltaic power plants, and this year the photovoltaic power plants were repaired and expanded. Photovoltaic modules can not only generate electricity, but also play a shading and heat insulation role after a large area of roof laying, reducing indoor cooling energy consumption.

"With this device, it is easier to use electricity on our island." Yang Yongfu, the company's electrician squad leader, said that he has been responsible for generating electricity on the island for 12 years and has witnessed the changes in the island's electricity consumption: from hand-cranked generators to new diesel engines to solar photovoltaic power plants, the upgrading of power generation equipment reflects the gratifying changes in the lives of officers and soldiers in coastal defense.
"Turn wet garbage into fertilizer, there will be less garbage on the island, and the environment will become better." Sergeant Wang Yeli, who was in charge of the company's logistics, kept wiping his new equipment, the "wet garbage disposer."
The ecological environment of the island is fragile, and if the domestic garbage cannot be properly disposed of, it will affect the environment of the sea around the island. Previously, the company was equipped with garbage sorting bins to sort garbage.
Now, Wang Yeli has another important task every day - put the classified wet garbage into the "wet garbage processor", which is crushed and stirred by the machine, fermented, and degraded, and the output can be used to raise livestock, or to fertilize the trees after secondary composting fermentation with fallen leaves and weeds.

"Dongmaozhou comprehensively implements the classification of dry and wet garbage, reduces, harmlessly and resources the wet garbage, and basically realizes that the wet garbage does not leave the island." Company commander Lu Haowen said.
The training tasks of the company are heavy, and it is the norm for officers and men to "wear soil on sunny days and mud on rainy days." Due to its remoteness from land, the island lacks fresh water, and well water with high salinity can affect the washing effect.
"Waterless washing machine" does not use water, less consumables, through the cracking of bacterial stains, microwave efficient decomposition, ultrasound, cleaning and filtration, the whole process of ultraviolet disinfection and other processing technology, a time can wash more than 20 pieces of training clothes, and after washing, wear, no ironing, basically can meet the needs of daily life.
In the two huts, soilless vegetables grow luxuriantly under the illumination of LED lights, which is the green energy supply pod of Dongmaozhou.
In the past, the officers and men guarding the island relied on the sea to eat vegetables by sea, and when they encountered typhoons and other weather, the supply ships could not get on the island, so they could not eat fresh vegetables. Although officers and soldiers built their own vegetable fields, the output was still very limited.

Sergeant Yang Guo introduced that the green energy supply cabin is a new type of three-dimensional planting equipment that can be off-grid for energy supply, full intelligent control and efficient production. Built-in LED light promotes the rapid growth of plants, vegetables can mature a stubble in half a month, compared with the sunshine greenhouse, high yield per unit area, sterile and pesticide-free, healthy and environmentally friendly.
"After the completion of the green energy supply module, it has become the most attractive place on the island, and the warriors like to go to the green energy cabin to 'enjoy the dishes' in their free time." Company instructor Wang Yepeng said.
Standing in the green energy supply cabin, Wang Yepeng counted other changes in Dongmaozhou: an ecological water system was built, and the ecological water generated was directly connected to the platoon through the direct drinking water pipeline; the automatic sewage treatment system was running non-stop, and it could treat more than 10 tons of various wastewaters every day... "From the former desert island to the 'beautiful island' to the 'ecological island', we must not only guard the island for the country, but also build the island better!" Wang Yepeng said.
