Nvidia abandons takeover SoftBank intends to promote chip design giant Arm's listing plan

Under huge regulatory hurdles, SoftBank's deal to sell British chip design company Arm to U.S. chip giant Nvidia has officially failed. Previously, regulators in the UNITED Kingdom and the European Union reviewed the deal in terms of antitrust and potential national security concerns, while the US Federal Trade Commission, believing the move would hurt competition in the industry, filed a lawsuit in December to block the deal.

Nvidia had planned to buy Arm for up to $80 billion. The U.K.-based chip design giant was acquired by SoftBank in 2016 for $32 billion. Arm has mastered the core technology of most mobile devices around the world, and most smartphones around the world, including the iPhone, use the company's chip architecture.

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said it was stepping up preparations for Arm's IPO as an alternative, saying it would be the most important IPO in the history of the chip industry. In the last three quarters of 2021, Arm's net sales soared 40% year-over-year to $2 billion.
