Mattia Binotto expects "some surprises" in early 2022, while competitors scramble to replicate each other's innovations.

Binotto expects some surprises at the start of the 2022 season

2022 marks the beginning of a new era in F1, a completely new design concept as this year's car is designed around ground effect aerodynamics. However, only time will tell whether the new car will bring the kind of "tight" race that F1 lacks.

With that in mind, Ross Brown and F1's technical team have gone through several rounds of tinkering to try to fill in any loopholes that might give a team an edge on the field. While he believes they've done just that, the team has spent the past year looking for innovations that will give them an early edge. Binotto believes this could bring some surprises at the beginning of the 2022 season.

"We can expect some surprises, especially at the beginning of the season, when some teams will find better solutions that other teams may not have thought of," he said. ”

Binotto believes Ferrari has the ability to react when necessary to further improve its competitiveness.

Speaking about the new car, Binotto said the drivers will also go through a period of adjustment as the car is very different from last season.

He said: "It's going to be a very different season, very different from the models we know. The regulations are completely new, with different shapes and aerodynamics, suspensions and mechanisms. We will drive different cars and the driver will have to adapt. They will be much faster in high-speed sections and corners, and much slower in low-speed sections. They will be harder, lower, and therefore more complex for the driver. ”

Binotto believes Ferrari have returned to third place last season and can rise to the challenge.

"If I look back, there are a lot of areas that need to be improved: the engine, the chassis, the aerodynamics, etc., today I saw a team that is improving, we will soon see the results of this work, and when we go on the track, regardless of how it performs, we have to understand and analyze it well. ”
