Diablo 4's game director was originally Luis Barriga. But Barriga was fired by Blizzard in August due to internal problems.

Joe Shely, on the other hand, joined Blizzard in 2007 as a senior game designer for Diablo 3. In 2017, Shely became part of the Diablo 4 development team and led the team in designing the Diablo 4 demo for the 2019 Blizzard Carnival.

Shely said in the update announcement:

I'm Joe Shely from the Diablo 4 development team. From the very beginning, I was responsible as lead designer and was honored to have the opportunity to work on this dark open-world action role-playing game, and to become the game director, leading a passionate game team to create Diablo 4. The members of the game team, like everyone else, were shocked by the recent events. A lot has happened since the last quarterly update article was published, and we will continue to live up to the philosophy we hold fast to. In addition, we will also invest the same effort to continue to develop Diablo 4.
