English poems for teenagers
In Me, Past, Present, Future Meet
Siegfried Sassoon
In me, past, present, future meet
To hold long chiding conference.
My lusts usurp the present tense
And strangle Reason in his seat.
My loves leap through the future's fence
To dance with dream-enfranchised feet.
In me the cave-man clasps the seer,
And garlanded Apollo goes
Chanting to Abraham's deaf ear.
In me the tiger sniffs the rose.
Look in my heart, kind friends, and tremble,
Since there your elements assemble.
The New Year is coming, and I want to talk to the teenager about time
The poem's author, Westgreave Sason (1886-1967), was a well-known modern English poet, particularly known for his anti-war poems. Sasson was born in a village called Manterfield in Kent, England, graduated from Cambridge University and belonged to the British gentry class. He made many achievements on the western front of World War I, but he also recognized the cruelty of war and came into contact with many lower-class people. His poetry is both anti-war and sympathetic. However, the poem we read today is not an anti-war poem. It is widely known to Chinese readers for one of the sentences, "The heart has a fierce tiger, and the roses are sniffed" by Chinese readers.
Let's first look at Mr. Yu Guangzhong's translation of this poem.
"To Me, Past, Present and Future"
For me, past, present and future
Discussions, different opinions, one after another
A variety of desires have plundered my present
Strangle reason on its throne
My love has crossed the barriers of the future
Dreams liberate feet and dance
For me, the cavemen seized the prophet
Apollo wearing a garland
Chant to Abraham's deaf ear
I have a tiger in my heart sniffing the roses
Examine my heart, dear friend, and tremble
Because that's where you are
