In 2012, Xiao Quan did a public welfare film project for the United Nations, "The Future We Expect 2032", and photographed more than 200 ordinary people in Beijing. From 2015 onwards, Xiao Quan began to continue this shooting plan and named it "Portrait of the Times".
In 2018, as a native of Chengdu, Xiao Quan returned to Chengdu again after more than 20 years to take a "best photo of his life" for the city and the "ordinary people" of this era. Xiao Quan took photographs of hundreds of ordinary citizens in Chengdu, trying to present a portrait miniature of an era.
"30 years ago, I photographed many of the literary elites of that time, but now I want to photograph the ordinary people of this era." Xiao Quan said that in the past 30 years, China has developed very rapidly, and as a photographer, he feels that he should be like the artists who have photographed in the past, through photography, to make a description of these ordinary but hard-working people.
"In the past, in order to shoot Yang Liping, I also needed to ride a bicycle to Renmin South Road to send a telegram to her, and at that time, even making long-distance phone calls was particularly luxurious, and writing letters was the way most people communicated." Xiao Quan pointed to the photographic equipment behind him, and now the photographer can transmit the photo at the first time after shooting, and the photographed person can also share it with his relatives and friends in time through the Internet, which was unimaginable in the past.
"For some time to come, I will turn my attention to the 'Portraits of the Times' series. This series focuses on today's China, the current Chinese. Xiao Quan said that the process of taking pictures is actually a process of communication between the photographer and the photographed, hoping that he can truly record the changes of this era and the state of people.
