Among the highly watched Male Athlete of the Year awards, the newly announced retired American football superstar Tom Brady led the finalists, in addition to Djokovic Djokovic, who won three Grand Slams last year, American swimming star Drexel, Kenyan marathon star Kipchoge, Bayern shooter Lewandowski and F1 driver Verstappen.
The nominees for Best Female Athlete include two track and field players, two swimmers, one footballer and one tennis player. Teams of the Year include last year's Copa America winner Argentina, last year's European Championship champions Italy, Barcelona women's team, NBA team Milwaukee Bucks, Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team and China's Olympic diving team.
Candidates for the Comeback of the Year Award include American gymnast Biles, British skateboarder Skye Brown, British diver Daley, Spanish motorcyclist Mark Márquez, Dutch cyclist Van Fleetn and British cyclist Cavendish.
The six candidates for the Breakthrough of the Year award are Indian track and field athlete Nilaj Chopra, world No. 2 Russian Medvedev, US Open-winning talented girl Radukanu, Golden Boy Award winner Pedri, Venezuelan track and field athlete Rojas and Australian swimmer Titmus.
In addition to these awards, the Laureus Awards also announced the list of candidates for the Best Extreme Athlete of the Year Award, the Best Disabled Athlete of the Year Award, and the Laureus Sports For Good Award.
