Snooker world champion Mark Selby says his mental health needs help

Mark Selby is a three-time Masters champion

World Number One Mark Selby admitted he "needed help" and had a "huge weight" off his shoulder after speaking openly about the fight with mental health.

Selby, 38, was eliminated from the Masters after losing 6-1 to finalist Barry Hawkins in the quarter-finals.

After the game, he apologized on social media for saying he had "relapsed" due to mental health.

"It feels like I don't have to hide behind a mask anymore," Selby wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

Leicester City's Selby is the winner of 20 ranking titles, including his fourth world title at Crucible last May, and is known for his tenacity in the standings.

He reached a semi-final at the World Grand Prix this season, but said after he left Alexandra Palace – where he was a three-time Masters champion – that he was "not in a good position mentally at the moment".

In a subsequent tweet, he added: "I can honestly say that of all the games I have won as a professional, the biggest game I overcame was yesterday (Saturday) by speaking out and finally admitting that I need help. Bottling it for years is not the way forward. Finally felt a huge weight unloaded from my shoulders.

"For those who have experienced or are experiencing it, it can be relevant to this.

Snooker's governing body, World Professional Billiards and the Snooker Association, subsequently provided assistance.

Chairman Jason Ferguson said: "We are always sorry to hear that our players are going through difficult times.
