A brief introduction to the novel The Financier

Through the depiction of Kopau and the director of the municipal finance bureau, the author exposes the despicable means of the capitalists exploiting the people, speculating and cheating, and unscrupulous accumulation of wealth, and attacks the evil nature of capitalism.

The novel is set in the late nineteenth century, the period when American capitalism moved towards imperialism, and is a personal history of the financial giant Kopau.

The Financier is the first in a trilogy of Desire by the preeminent American realist writer Theodore Dreiser.

Dreiser (1871-1945), a famous American realist writer, "Sister Carrie", "Jeanne Girl", "Giant", "Genius", "Stoga", "Fortress", "American Tragedy" and so on, are his excellent works.
