Hong Kong, January 25 (China News Network) The University of Hong Kong (HKU) announced on the 25th that it has launched a new "Top Athlete Admission Scheme", which breaks the rules and takes the athletes' athletic performance as the main condition for admission, hoping to encourage more outstanding athletes to enroll in HKU.

It is reported that applicants admitted through the "Top Athletes Admission Scheme" can choose to study Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Social Sciences, and all four courses adopt large categories of admission, so that athletes have greater flexibility in choosing majors or minors, so that they can allocate time. Top athletes who wish to apply for admission to HKU through this programme must be nominated and submitted by the Hong Kong Institute of Sport or other sports associations, etc. All applicants will be assessed by the Selection Committee as a whole, taking into account the applicant's athletic achievements, interview performance, letters of recommendation, personal statements, etc. If the athlete wishes to enroll in other courses, HKU will also make individual considerations according to the circumstances.

Yan Zhijian, Director of Admissions and International Student Exchange Affairs at HKU, said that he greatly appreciated the perseverance of top athletes in putting in the time and hard work to pursue their sports dreams, and the athletes who marched towards their goals and showed unparalleled perseverance, self-discipline and endurance, which are the qualities that HKU expects students to have and the key to achieving desirable academic results. HKU hopes that through this program, athletes will have a comprehensive development and will not lose the opportunity to study at university because of their dedication to sports.

Yan Zhijian said that the plan will give top athletes flexible learning arrangements and other different support, including residential scholarships, international exchanges, academic counseling, training and competition funding, so that they can balance the dual development of sports and academics, rest assured that they can pursue their dreams and break through themselves.

In addition, HKU Sports Centre will tailor training plans to athletes based on their physical fitness, sports and other factors, as well as arrange appropriate physical training and psychological counseling and other support. (End)
