According to previous reports, on the day of the January 6 riots, a woman was shot and killed by a capitol police officer inside the U.S. Capitol, and the woman's identity was subsequently confirmed as a veteran named Ashli Babbitt, a supporter of former President Trump.

Babbitt's death angered many conservatives in the United States, but the Congressional Police announced on Aug. 23 that the police responsible for the incident would not bear any consequences. An internal police investigation determined that "the officer's actions were lawful" and that he "would not face internal disciplinary action." In addition, the identity of the police officer will remain confidential due to "a large number of credible and specific threats", the police statement added that the police officer's actions "may have protected the officers and staff who were at the scene at the time from serious injuries and even possible deaths".

With the conclusion of this investigation, the likelihood of confirming the identity of the police officer who killed Babbitt is slim. In April, the U.S. Department of Justice closed its investigation into the shooting, and Babbitt's husband's request for disclosure under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act was unsuccessful (U.S. Capitol police are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act, but the Washington Metropolitan Police reportedly ignored this disclosure request). Babbitt's husband then filed a lawsuit, hoping to make more details about the shooting public.

Conservative Politicians in the United States, including Trump, have repeatedly demanded that babbitt's police identity be publicly killed, while some speculation has emerged about the identity of the gunman. One speculation Trump supports is that a "security chief" of a top Democratic official killed Babbitt. Another guess is that the gunman was a 53-year-old veteran police officer. (Editor: HHJ)
