Jules Joseph Lefibury was born on 14 March 1836 in north-central France in the Ile-de-France region. In 1852 he entered the National Higher Academy of Fine Arts and became a student of Leon Cogne. Like a typical academic artist, Lefibury began his career with historical and other narratives of traditional themes. He wouldn't have been like this all the time, and later in his career, he focused on portraits, especially female nude figures, that brought him great success.
In 1861, he won the prestigious Roman Prize for his historical painting The Death of Priamus. Between 1855 and 1898 he exhibited 72 portraits at the Paris Salon. In 1891, he became a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts. Many of his paintings are single portraits of beautiful women. His most famous portrait was M. L. Reynaud and the Prince Imperial (1874)。
