Facebook's parent company, Meta Platforms Inc, said Monday that its research team has built a new AI supercomputer, which is expected to be completed by mid-2022.

Meta believes that by then it will become the fastest supercomputer in the world.

Meta said in a blog post that its new AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) will help the company build better AI models that learn from trillions of examples, can understand hundreds of languages, and comprehensively analyze text, images, and videos to determine if content is correct or harmful.

Meta said: "This research will not only help ensure that people use our services safely, but in the future, it will also help build the security of the metacosm. ”

The social media company changed its name to Meta in October to reflect its focus on metaverses, which it believes will be the successor to the mobile internet.

The virtual world, a broad concept that has garnered a lot of attention in Silicon Valley in recent months, refers to the concept of shared virtual environments that people can access through different devices and can work, play, and socialize in them.

"The experience we're building for the metaverse requires enormous computing power (trillions of operations per second!). RSC will enable new AI models that can be learned from trillions of examples, understand hundreds of languages, and more," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.

Meta says it believes RSC is currently one of the fastest RUNNing AI supercomputers. A Meta spokesperson said they are working with teams from Nvidia, Pure Storage and Penguin Computing to build the supercomputer.
