August 23 marks the 63rd anniversary of the shelling of Kinmen by the Chinese People's Liberation Army. According to Taiwan's China Times News Network, former Taiwan regional leader Ma Ying-jeou posted a photo of the Peace Bell of the Kinmen Guningtou Peace Memorial Park on Facebook, reiterating the "1992 Consensus" and stressing that only cross-strait reconciliation can turn the past "killing battlefield" into a "peace avenue" for the two sides of the strait.

Ma Ying-jeou issued a document saying that the 1958 Golden Gate Gun Battle killed and injured not only the lives and property, but also the feelings of the people on both sides of the strait. He said that only by reconciling the two sides of the strait can the past "battlefield" become a "road of peace" for the two sides of the strait.

Ma Ying-jeou said: Because of the harmony that has brought about navigation and commerce, the shells fired from the mainland in the past have been transformed into silver bombs for trade and tourism, and tens of thousands of tons of clean water are transported every day, as well as shell casings and kitchen knives that tourists must buy.

Ma Ying-jeou stressed: What the Kinmen Gun Battle brought to Taiwan should not only be thanks and remembrance, but also a practical method of peace in the Taiwan Strait. Recent changes in Afghanistan have sparked a lot of discussion, and Taiwan, of course, must be prepared for danger in times of peace, "We cannot change the history of the 823 gun war, but we can create a peaceful future." Only in this way will the sacrifice of the military and civilian compatriots in Kinmen be worth it." (Taiwan Network Juanzi)
