Insufficient strength, not necessarily more than enough heart (cross-strait observation)

author:International Online

For a long time, the DPP authorities in Taiwan have been keen to inculcate in the people the illusory picture that "if there is a war between the two sides of the strait, the United States will come to save Taiwan." Now, the US military has fled Afghanistan in a daze, and the people on the island are waking up like a dream, knowing that the United States cannot be relied upon at all, and Su Qi, a former senior official of the security department, has also summarized the ATTITUDE of the United States toward Taiwan as "insufficient heart and strength." Su Qi only saw that the United States lacked strength, but how much heart could the United States have in sending troops to save Taiwan?

Public opinion on the island now says that the United States has abandoned the regime it has personally cultivated in Afghanistan, indicating that the United States mainly depends on its own interests in providing military protection for Afghanistan. Similarly, in order to balance China, the United States has actively co-opted some regional forces in an attempt to form a siege of China in the Indo-Pacific, but no one can say whether the United States will flee for the sake of new interests one day as it did in Afghanistan. If history repeats itself, then those who follow the United States today will probably regret it.

Others pointed out that when the United States says that it pursues a "vague policy" toward Taiwan, it is nothing more than wanting to play the "Taiwan card" with the Chinese government when it needs it. In recent years, the United States has stepped up arms sales to Taiwan and repeatedly sent warships through the Taiwan Strait, seemingly helping Taiwan in a "vague" way, however, the United States officials have never promised in black and white to "send troops when there is a problem" in the Taiwan Strait. The hope that the United States will certainly be able to "send troops when there is a problem" is nothing but wishful thinking of the DPP authorities. Through the changes in the situation in Afghanistan, the DPP authorities have also seen the attitude of the United States toward "friendly countries" and are well aware that the so-called "friendly relations" between Taiwan and the United States are by no means as reliable as imagined, and the United States will certainly abandon Taiwan when protecting its own interests.

According to Taiwan media reports, Taiwan's annual defense budget next year will total 372.6 billion yuan (NT$, the same below), an increase of 3% over this year. The report also claimed that in order to cope with the mainland's so-called "threat of force," Taiwan's defense department also planned and proposed a special budget of 200 billion yuan, including the production of missiles with "source strike" capabilities and shipbuilding funds, so as to strengthen the so-called "independent combat strength." The case has been decided by Tsai Ing-wen, the leader of the DPP authorities, and is expected to be sent to Taiwan's legislature for deliberation in early September. Since the DPP authorities came to power, they have been vainly trying to "resist reunification by force," and the "national defense budget" allocated every year has increased year by year by an average of 2 to 3 percent, basically not lower than the growth rate of GDP in the current year.

At present, the epidemic has seriously impacted the island's economy, the bailout policy has achieved little results, vaccines are still in short supply, and the people are complaining continuously, but the DPP authorities still need to increase the defense budget, which will inevitably occupy the budget for the island's economic and people's livelihood construction, how can it be beneficial to Taiwan's economic construction and people's livelihood? The so-called "mass-produced missiles" are nothing more than self-comfort and self-emboldening. Everyone can see very clearly that in the face of the mainland's powerful strength, taiwan will not be able to make more missiles, purchase even more advanced fighters, and chariots, but will only cheapen the ARMS dealers of the United States and the politicians on the island who have seized black gold in them -- this is also a driving force for the DPP authorities to instill the common people with such ecstasy soup as "the United States will come to save Taiwan."

August 23 marks the 63rd anniversary of the shelling of Kinmen by the Chinese People's Liberation Army. During the commemoration activities, former Taiwan regional leader Ma Ying-jeou reiterated the "1992 Consensus" and said that the recent changes in Afghanistan have triggered many discussions, and of course Taiwan must be prepared for danger in times of peace, and only by reconciling the two sides of the strait can the past "killing battlefield" become a "road of peace" between the two sides of the strait. The enlightenment given to the people by the Kinmen Gun Battle of that year was that the DPP authorities' attempt to rely on external forces and gain self-esteem by relying on foreign countries was simply not feasible. In the past, the Kuomintang authorities' vain attempt to rely on the United States to "counterattack the mainland" failed to materialize and was eventually abandoned by the United States; now the DPP authorities' vain attempt to "rely on the United States for independence" is even more deadly, and sooner or later they will be abandoned by the United States.

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The stability of cross-strait relations is the fundamental guarantee for Taiwan's long-term peace and stability and for the people to live and work in peace and contentment, and is where the security and future that Taiwan really needs lies. It is hoped that the impact of this "Kubble moment" will make the people on the island completely sober up and stop being fooled by the DPP authorities in "relying on the United States to resist the mainland" and "resisting reunification by force."
