Maximilian Luce was a prolific French Neo-Impressionist painter known for his paintings, illustrations, prints, and graphic arts. He was born in Paris in 1858 to a working-class family.
In 1872, at the age of 14, Luce became an apprentice to wood carver Henri-Théophile Hildebrand. During his three-year woodblock print apprenticeship, he also attended night painting classes at artists Truffet and Jules Ernest Paris by artists Truffet and Jules Ernest Paris. During this time, Luce began to paint oil. Later, he and his family moved to Montrouge, a southern suburb of Paris, where he attended a painting course taught by Diogène Maillard at the Gobelins tapestry factory.
Luce began working in Eugène Froment's studio in 1876, producing woodblock prints for various publications, including L'Illustration and The Graphic in London. At the same time, he developed his artistic skills in the studios of l'Académie Suisse and portrait painter Carolus Duran. In the studio, Luce became friends with Léo Gausson and Émile Gustave Cavallo Péduzzi, who would also work together to paint landscapes in the countryside.
He first brought his work to the exhibition at the Salon of Independent Artists in 1897, during which time the artist Camille Pissarro noticed his work. He became friends with Paul Signac and George Seurat and officially entered neo-Impressionist circles.
As a painter, inspired by Georges Seurat's separatist style, he experimented with the method of pointillist painting, as evidenced by his 1895 work On the Banks of the Seine in Poissy.
Luce's alliance with the Neo-Impressionists extended to their anarchist political philosophy, influenced by the Paris Commune, and many of his illustrations appeared in many anarchist publications. Although he is best known for depicting landscapes, Luce sympathized with the working class of the time and often took the daily life of ordinary people as his subject, sincerely showing a human suffering.
Until 1904, Luce lived in Montmartre and enjoyed painting on the streets. From 1904 to 1924 he lived in Auteil and then moved back to Paris.
At the end of his life, Luce reduced his political activity, withdrew from anarchist radicalism, and returned the style to the traditional Impressionist style. He died on February 7, 1941 in Paris, France, leaving us with countless beautiful landscape paintings.
