Qingdao, August 25 (Reporter Hu Yaojie) reporters learned from Qingdao Haichang Polar Ocean Park on the 25th that 7 Chinese national first-class key protected wild animals broke out of their shells under the careful care of the park's conservation staff, and were certified by the Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Branch of the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the Aquarium Professional Committee of the Natural Science Museum Society of China, which is the first successful artificial breeding of turtles in China.

It is understood that on June 1 this year, female turtles living in Qingdao Haichang Polar Ocean Park laid 30 turtle eggs, and the conservationists transferred the turtle eggs to the incubator in time. After more than 70 days of incubation, the first baby turtle bravely broke its shell. Currently, the first baby tortoise has a dorsal carapace of 5 cm long and weighs 25 g.

Qingdao Haichang Polar Ocean Park conservationist Mou Liangchen introduced: "When the baby turtle just hatched, because the yolk in the body is not completely absorbed, it will not be eaten immediately, generally 48 hours later slowly open to eat, we choose jellyfish, krill and other easier to digest food for the baby turtle to open." ”

At present, 7 baby tortoises have hatched out of their shells. After about a week of careful cultivation, 6 of them are developing normally and have eaten steadily, and the other 1 turtle is deformed and weak, and the current eating ability is relatively poor, and the nursery staff isolates and raises them and takes care of them carefully every day.

According to Wang Bin, deputy director of the Conservation Department of Qingdao Haichang Polar Ocean Park, the artificial hatching of turtles faces several difficulties, because its turtle eggs hatching cycle is long and easy to be contaminated by mold, flies and other corrosion and deterioration, conservationists need to continue to follow up the hatching of turtle eggs, timely removal of unfertilized eggs or moldy eggs to prevent the incubation of environmental pollution. At the same time, the development of turtle eggs on the temperature and humidity requirements are relatively high, maintain a stable, suitable temperature and humidity, turtle eggs can develop normally, once the temperature, humidity is not up to standard or fluctuations are too large, it is easy to cause abnormal development of turtle eggs.

Zhou Qingjie, assistant general manager of Qingdao Haichang Polar Ocean Park, said that as China's national science popularization education base, Qingdao Haichang Polar Ocean Park is committed to the protection and reproduction of marine animals, and has successfully bred the first artificially bred gray seal in China, successfully hatched China's first rock-jumping penguin, and successfully born the first case of artificial breeding of pseudo-killer whales in China. In the past 15 years, Qingdao Haichang Polar Ocean Park has filled many gaps in China's marine animal research and accumulated valuable data for the breeding and breeding of rare marine animals.

On February 5, 2021, with the approval of the State Council, the adjusted List of Wild Animals under National Key Protection upgraded sea turtles to wildlife under national key protection. In the 2020 Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Science Popularization Month, the China Sea Turtle Conservation Alliance awarded Haichang Ocean Park the title of "National Turtle Conservation and Breeding Base". The successful breeding of turtles in Qingdao Haichang Polar Ocean Park marks a major breakthrough in China's sea turtle conservation and breeding, and once again proves the feasibility of indoor breeding and breeding of sea turtles in the aquarium, which will become an important measure to restore the resources of wild sea turtle populations.

It is reported that the tortoise, also known as the red sea turtle, bagua turtle, etc., is a species of turtle genus in the turtle family, is the oldest living reptile, and dinosaurs contemporaneous life, has survived on the earth for 200 million years, known as "living fossils". (End)
