Taipei, 20 Jan (China News Service) -- Taiwan Railway Administration said on 20 January that in response to the Taroko train accident that occurred on April 2 last year, Taiwan Railways and the families of the 26 victims who have reached a settlement jointly filed a civil lawsuit with the Hualien District Court, listing the driver of the construction vehicle and related enterprises as defendants.

According to Taiwan media reports such as the Central News Agency and the United News Network, on April 2 last year, the Taiwan Railway's Taroko 408 train crashed into an engineering vehicle that slipped from the slope at the north entrance of the Hualien Qingshui Tunnel, killing 49 people and injuring more than 200 people.

Taiwan Railways earlier offered to pay NT$15.7 million to each victim in compensation (compensation). Taiwan Railway said that it had jointly named the 26 families of the victims who had been settled by transferring their claims for property damages to the families of the victims, and recently filed a civil lawsuit with the court.

It is reported that the defendants are Li Yixiang, the driver of the construction vehicle and the person in charge of the contractor involved in the case, and 7 other people, as well as Yixiang Industrial Society, Dongxin Construction Co., Ltd., United Land Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd., and Zhongzhu Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd.

Taiwan Railway said that for the families of the victims who were too late to participate in this civil lawsuit, they will be included in the form of additional plaintiffs. The amount of the claim is based on the amount of compensation (compensation) paid by Taiwan Railway, and respects the amount of individual requests and claims made by the family; after the court judgment is determined, the difference will be paid to the families of the victims in excess of the amount of compensation (compensation) paid by Taiwan Railway.

According to the China Times News Network, the Taiwan Railway 3187 southbound section train passed through Zhongzhou Level Crossing in Rende District, Tainan City at 1 p.m. on the 20th, when it hit a man, and the person who was hit died on the spot.
