In the dialogue, Sha erping stressed that we must look at China as a whole. He believes that since the reform and opening up, China's economy and society have made tremendous progress, including the extension of life expectancy and the elimination of absolute poverty. "All these tremendous advances, and the peculiarities of the system, require that people no longer understand it in terms of the old way of thinking of the 19th and 20th centuries or during the confrontation between the East and the West."
