Hana Horka: Czech singer died after deliberately contracting Covid

Hana Horka is a member of the civil society group Asonance

A folk singer from the Czech Republic died after deliberately contracting Covid, her son told the BBC.

Hana Horka, 57, was unvaccinated and posted on social media that she was recovering after testing positive but died two days later.

Her son, Jan Rek, said she was deliberately infected when he and his father contracted the virus so she could get a recovery pass to certain venues.

The Czech Republic reported a record number of Covid-19 cases on Wednesday.

Both Mr Lake and his father were fully vaccinated, and both contracted COVID-19 during the Christmas period. But he said his mother decided not to stay away from them and instead would rather expose herself to the virus.

"She should be quarantined for a week because we tested positive. But she's always with us," he said.

In the Czech Republic, proof of vaccination or recent infection with the virus is required to gain access to many social and cultural venues, including cinemas, bars and cafes.

His mother was a member of Asonance, one of the oldest civil society groups in the Czech Republic. Mr Rek explained that she had wanted to catch up with Covid in order to reduce restrictions on her movements.

Two days before her death, she wrote on social media that she was recovering: "Now there will be theaters, saunas, concerts."

On Sunday morning, the day she died, Ms. Hoka said she felt better and got dressed and went for a walk. But then her back started to hurt, so she went to the bedroom and lay down.

"After about 10 minutes, it was all over," her son said. "She suffocated to death".

Although she was not vaccinated, Jan Rek stressed that his mother did not believe some of the more bizarre conspiracy theories about the Covid vaccine.

Her philosophy is that she would be more open to the idea of covid infection than vaccination. It's not that we're going to be implanted with microchips or something like that," he said.

He added that there was no point in trying to discuss the issue with her because it would become too emotional. Instead, he hopes to convince others to get vaccinated by telling his own story.

"If you have a living example in real life, it's more powerful than charts and numbers. You can't really empathize with the numbers. ”

Jan Rek said his mother's band, Asonance, is "quite legendary" in folk and country circles.

Covid cases in the Czech Republic hit a single-day high on Wednesday, with 28,469 cases reported out of a population of 10.7 million.

The government has recently taken new measures to deal with this rise, including mandatory testing of employees and schoolchildren. The quarantine period for people who test positive but have no symptoms has been shortened from 14 days to 5 days.

On Wednesday, the Czech government announced it would cancel plans to impose mandatory vaccinations on certain segments of society. Earlier this month, thousands of people held demonstrations in Prague and other cities against its possible introduction.

About 63% of the total population of the Czech Republic is fully vaccinated, compared to the EU-wide average of 69%.
