The elections of Kinmen and Matsu do not need to be predicted, and the DPP cannot take them away

author:Ploughing cattle

Taiwan is already busy with the "nine-in-one" election at the end of this year, and the focus of the "nine-in-one" election is the county mayor election. According to the report, in response to the 2022 Taiwan county mayoral election, the DPP has set up an election countermeasure committee and a coordination working group, and the Chinese Kuomintang will release the nomination method as soon as the lunar new year.

A few days ago, Taiwan's veteran media personality Huang Weihan said in a political discussion program that there are at least 10 counties and cities, namely New Taipei City, Taichung City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Changhua County, Nantou County, Hualien County, Taitung County, Kinmen County, and Lianjiang County. In addition, the DPP has four counties and cities: Chiayi County, Pingtung County, Tainan City and Kaohsiung City, and the Chinese Kuomintang may have a hard time getting it back.

Leaving aside other analyses, there is no need to predict the election of Kinmen and Matsu (called Lianjiang County in Taiwan). In all these years since Taiwan was elected, the DPP people have never won in these two counties.

The situation of the successive county magistrates of Kinmen is:

Session name Party Period of office remark
1 Chen Shui is in Chinese National Party December 20, 1993 - December 20, 1997 Elected first
2 June 02, 1997 - December 20, 2001
3 Li Zhuofeng new party December 20, 2001 - December 20, 2005
4 December 20, 2005 - December 20, 2009
5 Lee Worth December 20, 2009 - December 20, 2014
6 Chen Fuhai No party membership December 20, 2014 - December 20, 2018
7 Yang Zhenhuan As of December 20, 2018

At present, Chen Yuzhen, a "legislator" of Kinmen County of the Kuomintang, has expressed her position of "considering seeking" the nomination of the KMT to run for the next term of Kinmen County, and challenges Yang Zhenhuan, the current KMT governor of Kinmen County. According to an external poll conducted by the KMT in early December, Yang's support is still 29.5 percent ahead of Chen's 16.4 percent.

The successive county magistrates of Matsu (known as Lianjiang County in Taiwan) are:

After the termination of field administration in Lianjiang County, Taiwan, in 1993, the kmt was elected by the KMT for the first time, and in 1997, the new party Cao Yuanzhang challenged for the first time, but the KMT Liu Liqun won; in 2001, the PFP Chen Xuesheng defeated Liu Liqun, who was seeking re-election; in 2005, the KMT court gave way to Chen Xuesheng, but Yang Suisheng and Wu Shizi, who was not a member of the KUOMINTang, insisted on running for election, and Chen Xuesheng was successfully re-elected; in 2009, the KMT nominated Liu Zengying, and Yang Suisheng challenged him twice, resulting in Yang Suisheng winning the election At the end of 2014, Yang Suisheng sought re-election, and Liu Zeng, who was in the same party, successfully challenged him and served as the county magistrate so far.

At present, Liu Zengying, the governor of Matsu County of the Kuomintang, will step down at the end of his two terms, and intends to hand over the baton to the current deputy county magistrate Wang Zhongming, and in addition, Cao Eryuan, the current director of the party's land administration bureau, is also interested in competing, and the "mutual fight within the party" may be staged again. The DPP has yet to decide whether to introduce a county commissioner.

Kinmen Matsu Location Map

Some people say that Kinmen County is a place where the blue-green ratio is unimaginable, and the political ecology of Kinmen County in the early years was roughly 95% blue and 5% green, which was quite disparate. In Matsu, the DPP's position was even more miserable, and in previous years there had been no DPP organizations and institutions. After the "legislator" election last year, the DPP actively recruited party members in Matsu and actively prepared for local party departments. On October 24, 2020, the DPP's Matsu Party Department was officially opened, which is the latest DPP party department to be established in 22 counties and cities.

So, why is the DPP's penetration of Kinmen and Matsu so weak?

The geographical areas of Kinmen and Matsu are close to the mainland, and residents have a strong sense of identification with the mainland.

In Taiwan, they are called Kinmen and Lianjiang in Fujian Province; on the mainland, they are called Taiwan's Kinmen and Matsu. Geographically, although they are closely related to the mainland, they are actually under the jurisdiction of the Taiwan authorities across a strait. In the eyes of many Kinmen and Matsu people, "they are Taiwanese, we are Kinmen (Matsu) people", another reality is that Kinmen is more than 200 kilometers away from the main island of Taiwan, and its nearest place is less than 10 kilometers away from Xiamen.

In the election, both counties and cities used to strongly support the Kuomintang, and later, they preferred to choose a new party, even the People First Party. Most Kinmen people consider the New Party to be partial (pro-) unification and defend the "Republic of China." The DPP has never been supportive.

The DPP's goal is to move toward "de jure Taiwan independence," and although it cannot be done now, it will still have to find a way in the future. The Kinmen and Matsu people generally do not accept this view. The elections in Kinmen and Matsu are very special, and the candidates selected are all candidates who oppose "Taiwan independence."

The East Lead Lighthouse of Matsu East Lead Island

The origin of the Matsu people is mostly Mindong people, and this demographic structure has not changed for decades.

Matsu people speak Fuzhou dialect (Changle accent mostly), which is often called "Ping dialect" or "Matsu dialect" in the local area, which is unique among the counties and cities on the island. Compared with the strong minnan flavor of other places in Taiwan, the local accent, architectural style, folk culture and many other aspects of the Matsu people have a deep imprint of Mindong.

The name matsu comes from Mazu, and there is a Tianhou Temple in Magang, which is said to be the location of mazu lin mo niang's crown tomb, which has a special weight in the hearts of the local people. The lighthouse on Dongyin Island is a famous landmark in Matsu.

Due to the relationship between history and ethnic groups, the political spectrum of the Matsu people has long been blue, and successive county governors and "legislators" have almost been taken over by the Kuomintang. Every time there is a "general election," the DPP's votes can be described as "pitiful."

Kinmen and Matsu endured too much artillery fire for Taiwan, but did not receive corresponding compensation.

From August 23 to October 6, 1958, the Fujian Front Troops of the People's Liberation Army shelled the Nationalist command structures, positions, warehouses and other military targets in Kinmen. This 44-day artillery battle made Kinmen and Matsu the forefront of resistance to the mainland. On the other hand, because Kinmen and Matsu have not been under Japanese colonial rule for 50 years, the political ecology of the two places is also different from that of the main island of Taiwan.

With the goal of "Taiwan independence," the DPP did not dare to have any undivided thoughts about Kinmen and Matsu, who were in the arms of the mainland, and at the very beginning it adopted an attitude of discarding them. It was only in recent years that Kinmen and Matsu slowly had the organization of the Democratic Progressive Party, and Kinmen also had DPP members. However, Kinmen and Matsu have no history of Japanese colonial rule, which also makes the Kinmen and Matsu people fundamentally different from some people on the island of Taiwan in terms of seeing problems and doing things. More often than not, they are more straight, less cunning; more bloody, less servile.

With regard to the problem of water shortage in Kinmen and Matsu, the mainland has actively created conditions to advance, while Taidang has done more to obstruct it.

The intertwining of history and reality makes the Green Camp very reluctant to see Kinmen and Matsu. Even in the "forward-looking infrastructure plan" promoted by the Taiwan authorities, the budget of more than NT$800 billion has been left very little for the two places in Kinmen and Matsu. Therefore, for Jin and Ma, since the east is not close, it is better to look west.

Jinma was the first region to open the "mini three links" with the mainland. Chen Fuhai, then governor of Kinmen County, set up the "Office of Mainland Affairs," hoping that the local government would play a pivotal role in "buffering and maneuvering" and "experimenting and experimenting" between the two sides of the strait. For Kinmen and Matsu, land tourists have become an important starting point for developing the local economy by traveling to the island through the "mini three links", and it is much easier to take a boat from Fujian to Jinma than to take a plane from Taiwan Island.

In order to solve the problem of long-term water shortage in Kinmen and Matsu, the mainland has actively promoted the supply of water to Jinmen, and on August 5, 2018, the Fujian-Kinmen Water Supply Project was officially opened to water, and the following year, the water supply to Matsu was shipped to Matsu. In this process, out of political considerations, the Taiwan authorities not only have an unpopular attitude, but also often obstruct them.

It is needless to say that a water supply contract has been negotiated for 23 years, and until the water is connected, the Taiwan authorities are still interfering. At the end of July 2018, the Kinmen Water Diversion Project from the Jinjiang River in mainland China was completed and has been put into use. The Kinmen County Government and the mainland were scheduled to hold their own water diversion ceremonies on August 5, but on July 27 the Mainland Affairs Council of the Taiwan authorities requested a postponement.

Taiwanese media personality Tang Xianglong questioned the DPP authorities on a political discussion program: "Kinmen people have less and less sense of identity with Taiwan, especially when the DPP is in power, has the DPP ever thought about what it has done for Kinmen?" ”

Chen Fuhai, the governor of Kinmen County, insisted on holding the "water opening ceremony" as usual. However, the MAC again claimed on the 30th that the current "timing is not appropriate" and asked the Kinmen County Government to postpone the ceremony. Moreover, the MAC said that only when the Taiwan authorities, the mainland, and Kinmen County arrive together can the activity be called a "water opening ceremony," and the incident occurred only because the definitions of the two sides were different.

Under the heavy pressure of the Taiwan authorities, Kinmen County had to change the "water opening ceremony" scheduled for August 5 to "kinmen villagers witnessing the ceremony of diverting water from the mainland." This was barely held as scheduled.

In response to a series of actions by the Taiwan authorities, Huang Zhixian, another taiwan media person, questioned at the time that the "Enzhun" Kinmen people drank water from the mainland, but "you are not allowed to shout loudly?" She criticized that drinking water without thanking her was simply an obscene order.

The above factors determine the fundamental difference between Kinmen, Matsu and Taiwan. No matter how much the DPP makes a fuss on Taiwan Island, Kinmen and Matsu will always be a forbidden place that they dare not dream of easily.
