The flower industry behind the "niche flower" becoming a "net red flower"

"Kao" Zhou Shiming did not expect that in 2022, Luo Zhenyu's "Friend of Time" New Year's Eve speech inadvertently "free publicity", let her pour half a life's dream of the niche flower Zhu Dinghong overnight became a "net red flower", what made her more unexpected was that she was greeted with a snowflake-like order, and the original annual sales were completed in just one month.

Luo Zhenyu mentioned that the wax seal vermilion red, belongs to the bulb flower variety, its flower type is unique, the flowers are gorgeous, shaped like lilies, because of the "wax sealing" technology, the flowers are clean and convenient, cutting to the "pain point" of urban young people raising flowers but not much spare time. For a time, this "niche flower" that was originally in the flowers quickly turned into a "net red flower".

As early as 2012, Zhou Shiming was first exposed to Vermilion, and then he devoted himself to the research and development and cultivation of Vermilion, when Vermilion was still a minority among the small flowers in the flower market.

In November 2015, Zhou Shiming participated in a training trip to Israel on "Modern Agricultural Technology Integration and Innovation System Construction" with the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province. She found that half of Israel's territory is located in the desert, but it can produce the world's top bulb flowers, so she is "fascinated" by the cultivation technology of Israeli facilities. Zhou Shiming hopes that this process can help the problem of how to achieve high quality, high output and high efficiency of planting.

Taking advantage of the gap in the training, Zhou Shiming looked for a flower shop on the street, through the mediation of the principal of the training class, Zhou Shiming was able to get acquainted with Assaf, a large Israeli vermilion grower and the world's top ten vermilion pricer, and her seriousness and persistence also impressed the Israeli industry "big coffee", and since then the two sides have signed a cooperation agreement in May 2016 after many mutual visits and inspections. After the implementation of the project, Assaf went to the Shengyin base in Dongguan three times to guide the planting and production work.

The cooperation with Israeli experts has brought Zhou Shiming's vermilion red production and cultivation to a new level.

Through continuous experimentation and breeding of hybrid varieties, Shengyin has established a huge vermilion germplasm resource bank, including more than 300 foreign registered commercial varieties, more than 8,000 kinds of self-bred strains, including many rare varieties with fragrance, and successfully obtained 7 provincial-level approved vermilion new varieties, which is the first in Guangdong and the largest number of units with new varieties of vermilion in the country.

In Zhou Shiming's view, it is inevitable that Zhu Dinghong will become an Internet celebrity flower. Vermilion red is easy to plant, huge flower type, rich variety of flowers, long flowering period, not only high ornamental value, the scope of application is also very wide, and easy to express logistics, is a high-quality variety of e-commerce sales. She predicts that the vermilion industry will reach 100 million grains / year in the future, which will drive the production and planting of 10,000 mu of bulb flowers.

Qiaoqiao borrowed "net red flowers" to explore the road to rural industrial revitalization

"In fact, even now, Vermilion is not a real Internet celebrity flower, it is still a very small category in the flower industry, but we believe that Vermilion will eventually become a 'Net Red Flower'." Zhou Shiming said.

With the promotion of the flower e-commerce market and the continuous introduction of new flower consumption concepts, flowers will no longer be limited to special commemorative scenes such as birthdays, Valentine's Day, wedding celebrations, etc., and more and more consumers have formed the consumption habits of "one flower per week" and "one flower per day", and the product repurchase rate and consumption frequency have increased significantly.

According to industry statistics, from 2015 to 2019, China's flower market increased from 125.9 billion yuan to 160 billion yuan, with an annual compound growth rate of 6.2%. From the perspective of flower planting area, the flower planting area resumed growth in 2015, and the flower planting area in mainland China reached 1.63 million hectares in 2018, an increase of 12.5% year-on-year.

With the marketization of flower e-commerce and the improvement of residents' consumption level and aesthetic needs, flowers have gradually changed from a high-end consumption to a mass consumption. In the next five years, the size of China's flower market is expected to maintain sustained growth at a compound annual growth rate of 7.3%.

While the flower industry ushered in great opportunities for development, Zhou Shiming was also thinking about how to use the flower industry to help rural revitalization.

In her view, industrial revitalization is the number one project for rural revitalization, and rural revitalization must be supported by industry. In the past year, Zhou Shiming, vice president of the Guangdong Flower Association, Dongguan Flower Association and member of the Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, has also thought and acted more on this.

In 2021, she led the team to cooperate with farmers in Nanxiong, Shaoguan: the government provided poverty alleviation funds to purchase seedlings, and Shengyin Company provided technical support to guide farmers to plant and recycle. This precise way of helping and supporting has achieved initial results, and a total of 80,000 plants were cultivated last year. This year, she plans to continue to promote this model in seven regions of Guangdong.

"To achieve industrial revitalization, it is more necessary to explore a sustainable cooperation model." She suggested that the government, village collectives, farmers, enterprises, and the four parties should be the main body to form a rural agricultural industry group to promote the rural industry to become bigger and stronger. The implementation of rural revitalization began with the government's public responsibility and strategic layout, and finally the rural operation system jointly built by villages, farmers and enterprises, and finally transformed into praise from all walks of life, especially the good reputation and traffic verification of villagers and consumers.

"There are many main bodies involved in rural revitalization, but the key is that the government, village committees, and enterprises need to form a three-legged situation, with the government as a whole, the village committee participating, and the enterprises taking the lead in forming a powerful 'locomotive' to lead the countryside to rush forward." Zhou Shiming said.

Guangdong and guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have obvious advantages in developing "high-end boutique agriculture". Zhou Shiming believes that Guangdong has gathered many talents and a keen market tip, which can provide very good ideas and sales channels for the commercialization of "high-end boutique agriculture". However, she also believes that due to the topography of Guangdong, Guangdong cannot be planted on a large scale, and it is recommended to choose products with high added value in selecting industries.

Taking flowers as an example, Guangzhou has always been known as the "flower city", Guangzhou Fangcun, Huadu, Conghua are very early flower bases, the basic conditions are good, coupled with the good economic conditions of Guangdong, the citizens have considerable consumption power, very suitable for high-end products; and the remote areas of western Guangdong and northern Guangdong should be used as the reserve force of the city center, focusing on the transfer to the city center after planting, forming a closed-loop industrial chain.

Independent innovation and breeding depends on the cooperation of government and enterprise scientific research institutions

As a leading enterprise in the industry, Shengyin's efforts in technology development and intellectual property rights have been noted by industry leaders. Last year, after the recommendation of the Beilin science and technology team, the seeds of 17 varieties of Shengyin were sent to Beijing and passed the final review of the expert group carrying the Shenzhou 12 manned spacecraft.

On June 17, 13 varieties of seeds were screened and launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center with the Shenzhou 12 spacecraft, and then docked with the Tianhe core module to form a combination for a three-month stay. On September 17, the Shenzhou XII manned spacecraft return module successfully landed at the Dongfeng landing field.

"This is a very landmark attempt," Zhou Shiming recalled, at that time I had the privilege of getting to know the Beilin science and technology team, the Beilin technology team was very optimistic about the vermilion industry, the company quickly cooperated and put the vermilion seed into space, and did not think too much, just thinking about whether the seed will produce mutations, whether it can give birth to an excellent variety, whether it can make some contributions to the breeding of mainland bulb flowers.

At present, the seeds have been sown and everyone is waiting for the flowers to bloom.

Bulb flowers occupy a pivotal position in the entire floral products, and in recent years, with the improvement of public awareness of vermilion, the development prospects of vermilion are also widely optimistic. However, these bulbous flower varieties basically rely on imports, and foreign countries hold pricing power. In order to safeguard the economic interests of the country, the bulbs will undergo technical treatment before export, and repeated planting will lead to variety degradation. Subject to foreign breeding companies, the lack of independent intellectual property rights varieties and commercial seed bulb production technology two major bottlenecks, restricting the good development of the mainland vermilion industry.

"Bulb flowers almost rely on imports, which is the pain point of the flower industry, because the pricing power is in the hands of foreign breeding enterprises, to change this phenomenon, we must independently innovate breeding and achieve mass production, and we also expect our self-bred varieties to compete with international varieties on the international market." Zhou Shiming said.

In her view, to solve the "card neck" problem in the industrial chain, we must first increase zhu Dinghong's scientific and technological innovation, in the collection of varieties, the screening of new excellent varieties, the technical research and development involving the whole process of planting production and warehousing, and the formulation of corresponding standards; second, accelerate the industrialization of excellent varieties, that is, put into planting and production as soon as possible to replace imported varieties; third, support the development of flower breeding enterprises. This is the fundamental way to improve the competitiveness of the mainland flower industry. In terms of policies, support enterprises to establish research and development platforms, promote the gathering of resources, talents and funds to enterprises, support the development of advantageous enterprises, and achieve sustainable output of good varieties; the fourth is to strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights. This is a guarantee for the sustainable development of the flower breeding industry. Improve the legal environment for intellectual property protection in the breeding industry, severely crack down on infringements, and create a good development environment for innovation.

Therefore, Zhou Shiming called on the two sessions of Guangdong Province to pay attention to the establishment of germplasm resource banks. "The seed industry is a national strategic and basic core industry, but the localization of flower varieties is difficult to complete alone by relying on only a few scientific research institutions or enterprises."

She suggested that the government should support agricultural enterprises more in terms of policies, form a combination of government policy support, universities and scientific research units, and enterprises to contribute funds, give full play to the complementary advantages of scientific research institutions and enterprises in colleges and universities, and suggest that attention should be paid to the establishment of germplasm resource banks, and the establishment of germplasm resource banks should be guaranteed by various aspects of land policies, so as not to cause the loss of rare varieties due to relocation.
