According to the Lanzhou Evening News on January 18, the year of the ox is nearing its end and the year of the tiger is coming, with the "Xiangyanghong 03" research vessel calling at the Xiamen International Cruise Terminal, the 48-day scientific expedition to the 69th voyage of China's ocean has been successfully concluded. In this deep-sea scientific expedition team of nearly 80 people composed of 14 units, Liu Yang, a 2019 master's student in the College of Geological Sciences and Mineral Resources of Lanzhou University, as one of them, can be described as a fruitful trip.

Going to sea again, she gained knowledge and friendship

The expedition was organized and implemented by the Third Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources. Liu Yang is a master's student jointly trained by Lan Dadi Mining College and the Third Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and previously participated in the scientific investigation of the first section of the first voyage of the "XiangyangHong 20" ship in 2020.

"In August and September last year, my mentor at The Ocean Three told me that there was an opportunity to go to the ocean and asked me if I could go? I said of course I went! Liu Yang, who learned that he had the opportunity to go to sea, could not hide the excitement in his heart.

The 69th Voyage Expedition of China Ocean is located in the western Pacific Ocean east of the Mariana Trench, and the main task of the expedition team is to carry out encrypted geological sampling and optical ray survey of polymetallic nodule resources in the mining area, so as to further understand the boundary of the deposit and estimate the resources in the survey area. In this scientific expedition, Liu Yang was responsible for the description and recording of sediment samples, the measurement of geomechanical parameters of on-site sediments, and the measurement of moisture content and compressive strength of polymetallic nodules.

Unlike the green astringency when he first went to sea, this time Liu Yang was more calm and gained a lot: "Box sampler, anchor system, OBS, underwater glider... These things, which were previously only seen on the Internet, are now finally being seen in reality. Working with people from different units not only gave me a comprehensive understanding of the Ocean Expedition, but also made me gain friendship. ”

There is no fear of the hardships of long voyages, only because of the love of science

As early as high school, Liu Yang was attracted to geology, so she did not hesitate to choose a geological engineering major when filling out the college entrance examination volunteer. "I was watching a BBC documentary where geologists went into the Naica Crystal Caves, which made me particularly yearning. Therefore, when I was in high school, I began to pay attention to the relevant information and various public accounts to understand a variety of minerals. ”

In fact, as early as the undergraduate stage, Liu Yang has participated in many field scientific expeditions, such as geological expeditions around the school and field internships jointly organized by the ten schools in Mount Emei. It is precisely because of his love of science that for Liu Yang, all kinds of hardships in the process of scientific expedition have become "small meanings". Watching seagulls prey on flying fish, watching the sunrise and sunset at sea, having fun with her companions on board, and gaining a wealth of knowledge are her most unique and unforgettable memories.

Liu Yang said that the first time he went to sea, he was determined to continue to engage in marine research, and if there is no big change in the future, he will continue to engage in marine research. Liu Yang said: "I am very fortunate to participate in the 69th Voyage Of the Ocean Scientific Expedition, which not only allowed me to learn a lot of knowledge and investigation skills, but also experienced the power of the sea, and I believe that it will be of infinite use for future development." ”
