The history of Olympic medals
Since the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, the awards of the Olympic Games, especially medals, have undergone many changes. Before the 1978 Olympic Games charter was formalized, there were no specific provisions for the production of medals. According to the Olympic Regulations formulated in 1978, the diameter of the Olympic medals shall not be less than 60 mm, the thickness shall not be less than 3 mm, the gold and silver medals must be made of silver with a purity of 92.5%, and the gold medals must be plated with at least 6 grams of gold.
The design and production of Olympic medals has always been the responsibility of the organizing committee of the host city, and neither the International Olympic Committee nor the National Olympic Committee has participated.
When the first Modern Olympic Games were held in Greece in 1896, only the 1st and 2nd place winners won medals, with the champion receiving a silver medal and the runner-up winning a bronze medal. The champion olive branch crown is also awarded, and the runner-up is the laurel crown. The diameter of the medals at this Olympic Games is 50 mm.
The 1900 Paris Olympics were the only Olympic Games to date that did not award medals, and the prizes of the champions were valuable works of art. Since then, the medals have been designed and produced by the organizing committee for the 6 Olympic Games, with different shapes.
In 1909, a regulation was adopted to standardize the design of the front of the medal. The diameter of the medal ranged from 30 mm (London, 1908) to 60 mm (Antwerp, 1920).
In 1928, italian artist Giuseppe Cassiooli symbolized the design of victory.
Since 1972, Cassioli's design has been used for the front of the medal, and the back has been added by the organizing committee to add its own design.
The medals for the 1984 Summer Olympics were designed by Los Angeles Solitus for the Amsterdam Olympics and are still in use today.
The 1928-1968 medal was designed on both sides by du Sturmer, an artist hired by the Cassie Commission, and was 60 mm in diameter and 4 mm thick. The gold medal of the champion contains 6.5 grams of 24K gold. The medal is placed in a small box of blue velvet to prevent damage.
In addition to awarding medals to the winning player, other rewards for the player have also changed and evolved over time. For example, at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, in addition to the usual medals, the organizing committee followed the ancient Roman way of awarding the champions a crown made of oak leaves, in addition to awarding a small oak tree to take home and plant in a place of their own choosing.
