The film is full of strong postmodernism, lost shoes, instant shooting and explosion of death, Doctor Who with a secret tattoo, a building that belongs to the sharp technology of the future, etc., all contain a kind of uneasiness and anxiety. In the postmodern future society, Nemo becomes an outsider, a "Truman" who is observed and played, while in the past time outside the foreign society, Nemo becomes a gamer, subverting every choice and fate in a game-like way.
In the future of 2092, Mars has become a popular holiday destination for Earthlings. At the age of 118, Nemo Nobatti (Jared Leto) is the last natural person to die. Confused by his memory, he kept recalling his childhood through hypnosis and interviews, but at each fork in life, he derived a completely different life. In these different versions, there is Anna (Diane Kruger), who remarries her mother (Natasha Little) and father (Rhys Ifans) who divorced and became Nemo's "sister"), Élise (Sarah Polley), who is depressed and emotionally unstable after marriage, and Jean (Fan Linh Dan Pham), an Asian girl with whom she has three children. The whole story contains the two emotional worlds of the protagonist, family affection and love.
The main line of the whole movie should start from the age of 9 for the protagonist Nemo, whose parents divorced him in this year and made a huge change in his life. Following his father or his mother became the first big choice in his life.
The love in the story belongs to the branch, and nemo's choice of father or mother gets a similar but different result. But I think the real story of Nemo's life is in the first choice, when he chose to leave with his mother at the train station to go to Canada, the shoelace broke, stopping him from catching up with the train, resulting in Nemo only choosing to be with his father. His mother then left home for seven years to live in Canada, far away from the Pacific Ocean, while he had to take care of his half-dead father at home. Moreover, the 118-year-old self and the whole future world and the story are Nemo's fantasies, perhaps just a fictional plot made up on the typewriter.
The internal logic of the film is embedded in the various stages of Nemo's life, before birth, after birth, adolescence, adulthood and old age, and Nemo, who is forgotten by the forgotten angels, can not only know the past but also foresee the future. Such a "goldfinger" did not change the misfortune in Nemo's life. Nemo's self-affirmation and expectation of the future are rooted in what he thinks he remembers. Nemo, who lives in the present, is deeply shackled by the past and the future, reality and imagination, and the present is constantly fading into the past, and at the same time, it is constantly becoming the future. For the future that I can foresee clearly, but it is difficult to make changes, using my "gold finger" to change.
