Synopsis

The secret to happiness is: make your interests as wide as possible and make your reactions to people and things as friendly as possible. The Conquest of Happiness is a small book on the philosophy of life written by the British philosopher Bertrand Russell, in which Russell discusses common problems such as competition for survival, boredom, jealousy, fatigue, etc., and elaborates on what he thinks can be avoided.

Reasons for recommendation

Perhaps, everyone in this world pursues happiness, but it is certain that there is no panacea in this world that will make you happy immediately. Russell's The Road to Happiness is no exception, but, as he says, happiness depends partly on the objective circumstances and partly on ourselves. Let's take a look at the wisdom of our predecessors, how to change ourselves, and see how this great wise man pursued his own path to happiness.

The structure of the book is simple, divided into two parts, the first part analyzes the causes of people's unhappiness, mainly melancholy, jealousy and fear. The second part discusses some ways to achieve happiness from the perspectives of love, family, and work.

Read books to share

There are many interesting and useful contents in the book, and today we have chosen one of the ideas to share with you: that is, happiness comes from external seeking, not internal seeking.

You can recall, what do we do when we are happy? Is it a party with friends to chat and watch a movie? Or do you do what you like with someone you like? I think most happiness comes from two things: the people we are interested in and the things we are interested in. In general, these belong to the outside world. In other words, it is the color of the external world that brings us endless happiness.

One might say that happiness comes from inner thought. Indeed, the pleasure of thinking is a supreme asset, and Russell admires this very much. But, in the final analysis, what we think about is also obtained from the outside world, which is the source of our thoughts. The more curious, the more interested we are, and the friendlier we are to people and things, the more happiness and creativity we will find in our exploration.

So, if you're not feeling too happy right now, don't close yourself off and think hard. I suggest you look for more hobbies and make yourself more interested in other people and other things.

Of course, everyone's path to happiness requires us to spend our whole lives exploring, and this book may be a direction marker on our path of exploration.
