Bomb Disposal Unit is the first film to recreate the real experiences of American soldiers in the Iraq War with great precision. The film recreates a small group of elite members of the U.S. military stationed in Baghdad, Iraq, on bomb-defusing missions, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EUD), to experience the unusual nature of their work, the intense working environment, listen to their every word, and feel the beads of sweat dripping from their foreheads. I believe that this "Bomb Disposal Unit" will bring everyone a rather enjoyable visual experience...

Duties: Dealing with explosive devices
In the war launched by the US military in recent years, it has put forward the two concepts of "non-contact" and "zero casualties", that is, the US military can reduce the casualties of its own personnel by giving full play to its own technical advantages and applying long-range precision strikes to eliminate the enemy. However, on the battlefield in Iraq, the actual situation later showed that this was only the wishful thinking of the US military and could not be achieved at all. To fill the power vacuum created after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's regime, U.S. soldiers still need to patrol the streets of Iraq's cities. In such a combat environment, the technological superiority of the US military does not provide sufficient protection for soldiers. In contrast, iraq's anti-American forces have repeatedly used various means to kill and injure U.S. military personnel, and the use of IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) is one of the ways.
Real-life EOD – Corvin, a noncommissioned officer of the U.S. 741st Weapons Company, is dismantling a group of IDODs made of mortar shells at a border post north of the Bari Kowt area near the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan on August 6, 2006

At the scene of explosive ordnance disposal, U.S. troops evacuate Iraqi civilians
IEDs are simple to make, but powerful. In the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, anti-American forces made a large number of discarded grenades, artillery shells and even civilian explosives into IEDs, hid them on the side of the road, and remotely detonated them when U.S. military vehicles or personnel passed by. Due to the usual large charge of IEDs, it can cause huge casualties and equipment damage. The IED caused so many casualties to U.S. forces in Iraq that $496 million was earmarked in the U.S. defense budget for 2009 to deal with the IED.
The character portrayed in this film is the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group (EOD) that specializes in disposing of such explosives, often referred to as the "Weapons Company" in the U.S. military. As a military explosives disposal unit, the original responsibility of the EOD was to clear mines and dispose of military explosives such as unexploded aerial bombs. In Iraq, where they have to work with weird, dangerous IDODs all day long, and the risk of work is extremely high, EOD members are basically volunteers, and almost everyone has extraordinary detonation skills.
Thompson carefully placed four blocks of C4 explosives with the detonator removed on the body of the 155mm shell
The IED was detonated, and Thompson was killed when he failed to withdraw from the kill range in time
Threats: Several TYPES of IDO In the film
The EOD in the film is an explosive ordnance disposal team of a B Company of the US military in Iraq. Thompson was an explosives disposal specialist and the core of the EOD team; Samborn, a black veteran with extensive combat experience, and Eldridge, a recruit, were assistants to assist him in the removal of explosives and to keep the detonators on alert. Every day, the EOD drives a Humvee carrying explosives suits and other explosives removal tools to the place where the IED or suspicious items are reported to be found to be identified and detonated. In the process of disposing of the IED, Thompson unfortunately died in the line of duty. His successor, James, opposed the traditional cautious work style of the detonators and was arrogant, which caused disagreements among the members of the group.
The film takes the audience to follow this group of EOD members to witness several representative IEDs and their treatment methods that are often heard in news reports.
James successfully removed the IED's detonator from the front of the shell
Next to the first IED that James dismantled, there was also an IED made of a group of 6 shells
roadside bomb
As the name suggests, it is an improvised explosive device placed on the side of the road, and it is also the most common type of IED.
At the beginning of the film, U.S. troops and Iraqi soldiers suspected of being IED are found blocking streets and evacuating nearby residents while calling for EOD. When Thompson and the others arrived, they first used a remote-controlled detonation robot to check the suspicious target and found that it was an IED modified from a 155mm howitzer shell.
The EOD's disposal of IEDs follows the principle of risk minimization, detonating in situ if local conditions permit, and in densely populated areas, the IED detonation device is first dismantled and then transported to the field for centralized detonation and destruction. The detonation method is to place the C4 explosives installed with the IED, and the detonators connect the current outside the safe distance and use the C4 explosives to detonate the IED. During a disposal process, due to the failure of the remote control detonation robot that went to place the C4 explosives, Thompson put on the detonation suit and personally deployed it. Just as he was about to return, anti-American militants detonated the IED with their mobile phones, and Thompson was killed because he failed to leave the blast range in time.
After James took over Thompson's duties, the first time he went to the scene to deal with a roadside bomb was also done. When James led the team to the location where the patrol reported, he found that a group of soldiers of the First Cavalry Division had been frightened by the IED, which had not yet been confirmed, and abandoned the car and hid in an alley. James did not wait for the remote control detonation robot to be in place, so he put on the detonation suit and went to inspect it himself. Through two wires found in the roadside garbage heap – the municipality of Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, has been paralyzed by the war, and the garbage everywhere has become an excellent cover for laying roadside bombs – James shuntened the vine to find an IED converted from a 155mm howitzer shell, successfully dismantled it, and found another 6 shells connected by another wire near it! Fortunately, James quickly removed the detonator before the anti-American militants had a chance to detonate it, so that he did not cause damage.
Car bombs
An IED that is loaded with a motor vehicle, which is generally very large in size and power, and can be detonated when passing or reaching a target location.
The EOD was dispatched again because of the detection of the IED outside a United Nations presence in Iraq, but the Iraqi police who reported the situation did not see the IED in person. He explained that a modern sedan was parked at a non-designated location and that the rear of the car was sunken and clearly loaded with heavy objects, and with years of experience on the streets, he thought there must be something wrong with the car. James put on his explosives suit and went forward to inspect, although mentally prepared, but when he pried open the trunk of the car, it was full of IEDs made of aerial bombs and large-caliber shells. James simply took off the detonation suit and took off the heavy helmet - this large pile of IEDs is too powerful, if detonated, the detonation suit can not provide effective protection, but will hinder the removal. After a careful search, James finally found and removed the switch that connected the detonation wire.
It is worth mentioning that the C4 explosive used to detonate the IED, like most modern military explosives, has similar stability characteristics: that is, it will only be detonated when certain conditions are met, such as detonation using a detonator or when a certain detonation speed is reached, otherwise it will not be detonated even if it is burned or physically impacted. This stabilization feature effectively guarantees the safety of ammunition during storage and transport. Therefore, in the film, after the car is hit and caught fire, the aerial bomb in it does not explode due to the high temperature.
Suicide bombers
That is, the IED is carried by the human body to form a "human bomb", with the cover of civilian appearance can easily approach the target, its own results are self-evident.
Iraqi "human bombs" strapped with explosives came to the rescue of the US military
James tried his best to remove the explosive device from the Human Bomb
An Iraqi who appeared to have been coerced into using it as a "human bomb" came to the U.S. military post with a body full of explosives for help, only to frighten the U.S. soldiers inside the post. After the EOD arrived, James put on his explosives suit, told the "human bomb" through the Iraqi interpreter to calm down and not move, and then began to examine the explosive device on his body. It turned out that the bomb was fixed to the human body with a thick steel bar and was about to detonate in the countdown. James tried his best not to dismantle it, he rushed away after apologizing to the "human bomb" at the last minute, and with a loud bang, the "human bomb" disappeared without a trace along with the traditional hollywood movie that the audience expected to appear in the traditional hero who saved innocent people at the last minute, reminding people that this is the real war!
Lost item bomb
In the film, a civilian officer follows EOD to the scene of the explosives and persuades Iraqi civilians to leave on the periphery. Due to his lack of actual combat experience, he did not notice that someone left the pocket "left" on the ground, and as a result, he was blown to pieces because it was IED that was contained in this pocket.
These passages of detonation operations succeed in creating a suffocating sense of tension. At the scene of the detonation, it is not only Thompson or James who are directly facing the IED, the danger is not only from the IED. Those who watched from all sides, as well as "photographers" holding DVs hoping to capture footage of U.S. casualties and upload them to the Internet, and perhaps there were hidden anti-American armed men among them. People who set up IED can almost watch their "work" be dismantled by EOD or blow up EOD. At times, U.S. soldiers can only brutally drive away Iraqis who may really just want to talk to them, without caring whether their actions will fuel anti-American sentiment.
Sharp Weapon: Explosives removal equipment in the film
Detonation suits
In the film, the EOD-8 detonation suit worn by the detonator is the standard equipment of the EOD, which is manufactured by the world's largest manufacturer of explosives disposal clothing, MED-ENG, Canada.
James wears an explosives suit made by MED-ENG
Cooling system control button panel on the sleeve of the EOD-8 venting suit
The EOD-8 detonation suit consists of a helmet, top, and pants. The helmet can be adjusted to fit 99% of the head shape, the large field of view mask can be opened and closed with one hand, the microphone is built-in, and the lighting on the forehead is powered by a built-in battery for 5 hours of continuous illumination. The jacket's unique "all-round protection of the front chest and back" design concept and biomimetic spine protection system can effectively protect the overpressure injury, shock wave injury, debris injury, combustion injury and toxic gases released by the explosion to ensure the safety of the detonator and maximize flexibility and mobility. The optional cooling system can effectively reduce the temperature inside the detonation suit, improve wearing comfort, reduce fatigue, and is very suitable for the hot Middle East region. In order to prevent radio signals from interfering with explosives, the EOD-8 detonation suit also uses wired communication, with a communication cable of about 120 meters long, as well as optional piggyback respirators and nuclear biological and chemical protective clothing to perform the search and exclusion of nuclear biological and chemical equipment.
In footage of the car bomb being defused, James uses a Hugh Fell tactical light to illuminate his search inside the wreckage. And the Peltor ComtacII. noise-canceling communication headset he wears can actually talk to his comrades in the absence of an external radio and transmitter, which almost makes the author think that it is a new model specially developed by Peltor for EOD, and after many verifications, it is found that this is actually the most obvious and least inappropriate omission in this film.
Excise tongs
The detonation tools that appear in the film mainly include the Lanka EOD M11 saber and several explosives removal tongs. The Lanka EOD M11 saber is similar in appearance to the M9 bayonet, except that the M11 saber does not have a muzzle collar on the handguard, nor does the end of the handle have an inverted T-slot and elastic snap for joining the bayonet holder of the rifle, so it cannot be mounted on the M16/M4 rifle as a bayonet. The surface of the M11 saber body has been black phosphating, and it only has functions such as stabbing, cutting and sawing, which is somewhat inadequate as an extrusion tool. Therefore, the most used EOD in the film is the following explosives.
The MOLE webbing on the chest of the Aldridge Tactical Vest is fitted with Lezeman WAVE explosives
Lezeman WAVE explosives pliers
At the beginning of the Film, EOD appears in a Humvee, and one of the team members, Eldridge, pinned a Lezeman WAVE blowout pliers on his ACU IBA bulletproof vest. This is a very practical pliers in daily life and outdoor activities, the biggest advantage is that you can directly open the main knife with one hand without opening the pliers. WAVE vent pliers are not the main standard detonation pliers for EOD, but as an auxiliary tool.
James is using SOG detonator tongs to cut wires from the detonator
SOG B61 vent pliers
SOG B63 vent pliers
The SOG B63/B61 vent clamps are standard with EOD. This is one of the ones James used to cut the detonator wires when he defused the roadside bomb. The B61/B63 is finished in black and features a red wine-like corkscrew booster on the handle, making it easy to cut the thread.
There is also a SOG S69, EOD's latest explosives removal tongs, which is equipped with a detonator drilling tool dedicated to the C4 explosive block to drill holes in the C4 explosive block, but I did not find it in the film. It doesn't matter if you don't have this special tool, there is a scene in the film where James directly uses the tip of the detonator to punch a hole in the C4 explosive block to install the detonator.
James drilled holes in the C4 explosive block with explosives pliers to mount the detonator

In addition, in the fragments of the EOD team going to the field to destroy the IED, there are also "Pyriken" safety boxes specially used to place detonators, which is also very practical.
