However, there are clues that she may not be an ordinary person — fans believe that later sequels will gradually reveal her origins.
The Force Awakens identifies Rey as coming from a prominent family, and Ryan Johnson changed that in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, pointing out that she's actually just an ordinary person. Some fans think this contradicts the lineage identified in Star Wars 7, but others think it is more novel, because Star Wars legends have always told the story of a few families. But Skywalker Rise eventually reveals that everything about Rey before was a lie, and that she was actually The Granddaughter of Emperor Pa, which complicates things even more.

According to Ridley's recollection, it is clear that Lucasfilm did not have a definite plan when the role of Rey was introduced in The Force Awakens. This leads to a chaotic whole story, which is particularly prominent in Skywalker Rises. Due to the intricacies of the plot, leaving many unanswered questions, the entire Skywalker saga does not satisfy fans.
After The Force Awakens, there was speculation that Rey might be a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ridley himself isn't very clear about what Rey really has to do with the Jedi Master, but it's curious why they gave up on that setting. Maybe that's because fans have already guessed about the situation, and Lucasfilm wants to create some sort of reversal, like the revelation in Empire Strikes Back that Luke is actually Darth Vader's son.
