From the conversation between Dagon and the field trio, it can be seen that Dagon is eager for something called "bondage". When the field trio invited Dagon to fight alongside them, it was treating Dagon as a friend. Without Carmila's manipulation, Dagon would most likely have turned into a giant of light.
