Boeing's 2021 aircraft deliveries are much lower than Airbus'

U.S. aircraft manufacturer Boeing saw a sharp increase in aircraft deliveries last year, but still lagged far behind its main rival, Airbus, according to foreign media reports.

Boeing said on the 11th that the company delivered a total of 340 passenger aircraft to aviation companies and other buyers in 2021, almost double compared with 157 in 2020.

Still, Boeing's 2021 aircraft deliveries are still far lower than major rival European aircraftmaker Airbus. Airbus said on the 10th that the company delivered 611 aircraft last year, an increase of 8% over 2020.

In 2021, Boeing continues to be adversely affected by factors such as the grounding of the 737 Max model, the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on aircraft demand and manufacturing issues. Boeing's aircraft deliveries were dominated by the 737 Max models. After two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019, regulators around the world grounded the model for nearly two years. At present, major markets around the world have successively allowed the aircraft to resume flights.

At the same time, the epidemic has caused a sharp decline in demand for airlines around the world, and Boeing's business has also been hit. Boeing expects global air travel demand to return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 or 2024, after which it will take years for Boeing to return to its long-term growth trend.

In 2021, Boeing's 787 Dreamliner continued to suffer from quality problems, and had to suspend deliveries and implement production cuts. In 2021, Boeing delivered only 14 787 Dreamliners, down from 53 in 2020. According to Agence France-Presse, Boeing's additional costs due to the 787 problem amounted to $1 billion. Boeing is currently in talks with U.S. regulators on the resumption of delivery of the model.

It is reported that Boeing's total order number of aircraft in 2021 is 909, most of which are Max models. After the adjustment, Boeing's net orders for 2021 totaled 479.

Boeing plans to report fourth quarter and full year 2021 results on Jan. 26.
