Today in history: Chiang Ching-kuo died on January 13, 1988, ending the Chiang family era

On January 13, 1988, the then leader of the Taiwan region Chiang Ching-kuo suddenly felt unwell after getting up in the morning, although his blood pressure, pulse and body temperature were normal, but because he did not eat breakfast, he supplemented nutrition with intravenous injection, but that afternoon he suddenly vomited a lot of blood, although rescued by CPR, he still lacked surgery, and Chiang Ching-kuo finally died of heart failure in taipei's Seven Seas Apartment, at the age of 78. Lee Teng-hui, then deputy leader, took over supreme power, and the Chiang family era came to an end.

After Chiang Ching-kuo became "chief executive" in 1972, he became frail and sickly, mainly due to the deteriorating diabetes that caused blurred retinas, kidney inflammation and necrosis of the muscles in his legs, which made him have to use a wheelchair to later travel.
