Premier League Copyright Dispute Sentenced PPTV awarded damages for breach of contract royalties

The dispute over domestic copyright in the Premier League has finally come to an end. The Premier League has officially announced that the British High Court has imposed a penalty on the broadcast fee lawsuit between the Premier League and PPTV, which needs to pay compensation totaling up to 164 million pounds to the Premier League.

The Official Premier League website issued a statement saying: "The Premier League welcomes the High Court's decision today that former broadcast partner PPTV has not paid the broadcast fee. When there is no other option, the Premier League will vigorously defend its contractual rights. The Premier League will now begin a recovery process to recover ppTV's delayed costs and associated costs. ”

Premier League Copyright Dispute Sentenced PPTV awarded damages for breach of contract royalties

In 2017, PPTV won exclusive broadcast rights for the Premier League's three seasons of 2019-2022 for £564 million (about 5 billion yuan) for three years. But before the start of the 2020-21 season, PPTV refused to pay a second royalty fee (£157 million). The Premier League subsequently terminated its cooperation with PPTV and claimed compensation from it, but PPTV had a completely opposite view, believing that due to the epidemic, the Premier League had been suspended for up to 3 months, and the fees paid by the copyright operator of the event did not actually have the desired effect, and even damaged the interests of the operator, and the official requirements of the Premier League were unreasonable.

Until the contract between the parties was terminated, PPTV failed to pay two installments in 2020. Under the terms of the contract, from the payment due date (1 March 2020), the Premier League should receive interest 2% higher than Barclays' benchmark rate (0.25%).

After a lengthy period of litigation, the final verdict supported the Official Premier League's claims. However, PPTV belongs to Suning Group, and according to the current financial situation of Suning, it is not easy for the Premier League to get this fee, and the figure of 164 million pounds may continue to grow in the coming period.
