The Nets do have arguably the best players in the world, Durant and Harden, but the Nets don't have a good lineup depth that will seriously affect their chances of winning an NBA championship.
If the Nets do decide to trade Irving for a player like Simmons, that's not the craziest thing in the world. Simmons is nowhere near as good as Irving, but the Nets can improve their defense, at least they know simmons is on the court every game.
2. Take action before the deadline to increase the depth of the squad
The Nets' biggest problem at the moment is that Irving can't play, and they don't have enough depth. Aside from Durant, Harden, Mills and a few others, their team's roster of role players isn't outstanding.
In the playoffs, that's not necessarily the worst thing in the world, as it's well known that Durant and Harden will play more than 40 minutes a night. When the Bucks and Nets met in last season's Eastern Conference semifinals, the stars of both teams stayed on the court to play almost every minute.
If the Nets want to succeed against other top teams in the Eastern Conference, that's what they have to do. Depth doesn't necessarily win you a championship because at the end of the day, star players have to perform well. It's just that the Nets need to be careful that their depth is so poor that they can't beat other top teams in the series.
