France's National Commission for Information and Freedom (CNIL) announced the move in a statement on Thursday (6), saying Google would be required to pay 150 million euros (about $170 million) over three months, and Facebook would pay another 60 million euros (about $67.8 million) or face an additional fine of 100,000 euros per day.

The data protection regulator said the way the companies used "cookies" — the small amount of data generated by users browsing the site, which can be used to track users' activities — did not adequately obtain individual consent because Facebook and Google made it easier for netizens to authorize cookies, while rejecting it required several steps.

Karin Kiefer, head of the commission's data protection and penalties team, said, "When you accept cookies, it's done with just one click. Rejecting cookies should be as simple as accepting them. ”

The regulator also said the practices violated France's data privacy rules and ordered the companies to "provide internet users based in France with a way to reject cookies as simple as the existing way of accepting cookies." ”

Both Google and Facebook have issued statements that they will work fully with French authorities to resolve the issue, but Facebook insists that its "cookie consent settings feature gives users more control over their data" and disputed the questions raised by the CNIL. Google also argued that "people trust us to respect their privacy and keep them safe." But despite this, Google said it would seek "further changes" to comply with the order. (Editor: SDY)
