The Japanese tech company will set up a new operating subsidiary called Sony Mobile. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said at the CES Consumer Technology Trade Show on Tuesday that in the coming months, he is considering the commercialization of electric vehicles.

"With our imaging and sensing, cloud, 5G and entertainment technologies, and our mastery of content, we believe Sony is well positioned as a creative entertainment company that redefines mobility," Yoshida said.

The company, known for its electronics and entertainment products, plans to use artificial intelligence and robotics in its new electric vehicle business. It unveiled the SUV prototype Vision-S 02 at the CES conference in Las Vegas.

The concept SUV uses Sony (SNE) sensors to implement some of the autonomous driving features and leverages the company's expertise in entertainment. Passengers can play video games while connecting to their PlayStation consoles at home.

Sony unveiled its first prototype, the Vision-S 01, two years ago and began testing on public roads in Europe in December 2020. Sony said in a press release that the new SUV will use the same eviction cloud platform as the first model.

It's unclear whether the company wants to produce cars under its own brand or partner with other automakers.

For years, there has been speculation that Sony's rival Apple (AAPL) is considering building its own electric car. Rumors resurfaced last April when CEO Tim Cook hinted that self-driving would be a core feature of any Apple car, but the $3 trillion company has so far not confirmed plans to build the car.
