In the last Southeast Asian Championships, Malaysia finished runners-up and the team aimed to reach the final in this tournament. However, in the group stage, Malaysia lost 0-3 to Vietnam and 1-4 to Indonesia, and the group failed to qualify.

After the match, Tan Ching Ho communicated with the Malaysian Football Association to resign as head coach of the national team, and the Malaysian Football Team agreed with Tan Ching Ho's resignation application and thanked him for his contribution to the Malaysian national team during his tenure.
