Today, No. 50 Mu Nan Road, Heping District, is Zhang Xueming's former residence in Tianjin. Mayor of Tianjin before liberation
On November 8 and November 26, 1931, Japan caused two riots, known in history as the Tianjin Incident. Zhang Xueming, then mayor and police chief of Tianjin, was aware of the japanese plainclothes team's insatiability, and he went to Beiping to report to Zhang Xueliang on the security situation in Tianjin and the activities of the Japanese army.
According to the analysis of the situation, Zhang Xueming said: "Before coming to Beiping this time, we conducted research, and only by fighting is the way out, and there is no future without fighting. After returning to Tianjin, Zhang Xueming followed Zhang Xueliang's instructions, deployed his defenses in advance, and strengthened his vigilance.
On the evening of November 8, Japanese plainclothes troops set out from the Japanese Concession and attacked the municipal government, the municipal police station and other places. Because Zhang Xueming had made preparations earlier, he killed and wounded more than 50 enemy members and captured more than 100 prisoners that night. By the early morning of November 9, Zhang Xueming led his team to repel the plainclothes attack, killing and capturing more than 600 people, and the rest fled back to the Japanese concession.
Director of People's Park
After the liberation of Tianjin on January 15, 1949, Zhang Xueming returned to Tianjin. In 1950, Zhang Xueming wrote to Premier Zhou Enlai, hoping to give himself a chance to study. Soon, he entered the North China People's Revolutionary University and returned to Tianjin after graduation as the director of Tianjin People's Park.
A Newspaper in Hong Kong at the time taunted Mr. Zhang, saying he had fallen from the mayor's throne into a gardener's mud pit. Zhang Xueming said with boldness: "Chinese, which accounts for a quarter of the world's population, are all gardeners who build socialism, and it is the ignorant people who make a big fuss. ”
In 1954, Zhang Xueming commissioned Zhang Shizhao, director of the Central Research Museum of Culture and History, to send a letter to Chairman Mao Zedong, requesting an inscription for the park. On September 19 of the same year, Chairman Mao replied to the letter and attached the four characters of "People's Park" written in his own handwriting. This is the only plaque inscribed by Chairman Mao for the domestic park. Chairman Mao's handwritten inscription and reply to the letter read: "Mr. Xingyan: Huishu respectfully understands."
