In the fourth year of the Qianlong Dynasty (1739), Fuding was separated from Xiapu County in Funing Province (formerly known as Funing in eastern Fujian) and established as an independent county. In volume 81 of the Records of Emperor Gaozong of the Great Qing Dynasty, Hao Yulin, the governor of Fujian and Zhejiang, has the words "As requested, the name of the county is 'Fuding'", and when it was approved, this newly established county was called "Fuding".

The name of Fuding County is actually derived from the Fuding Mountain on the border between the eastern part of the county and Zhejiang, which is clearly recorded in the "Fujian Tongzhi", "Funing Fuzhi" and "Fuding County Chronicle".
