Shang Dynasty

The Shang Tomb no. 1 of Subutun in Qingzhou City, Shandong Province was excavated

It is now in the collection of Shandong Museum

It should have evolved from the Neolithic cutting tool, which was either a weapon or a torture device during the Shang Zhou Dynasty, and also symbolized power and status. The two square holes in the upper part of the cymbal are used to bind the handle, and the middle is decorated with a human face pattern, and the mouth is angry and majestic, which is basically consistent with the mysterious and eerie ornamental style of the Shang Dynasty bronzes, and is named after the inscription "Ya Ugly" on both sides of its mouth.

The interpretation of "sub-ugly" is still controversial, and now it is basically recognized as the clan emblem. Qingzhou was one of the ancient nine prefectures where the Dongyi people established many Fang states during the Shang Dynasty. According to the literature, the Bogu clan of the late Shang Dynasty lived here and was the main ally of the Shang in the east, and was overthrown at the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty because of its participation in Wu Geng's rebellion against the Zhou. The age of the tomb of Subutun should be the end of the Shang Dynasty, so it is speculated that the tomb is related to the Bogu clan, and "Yau" is the clan emblem of the tribe. This statement is still inferred, but from the burial system of the tomb and the characteristics of the excavated artifacts, it can be seen that it is closely related to the Yin Shang culture.
