"At the beginning of the establishment of the Institute, the average age of teachers, students and employees was only 23 and a half years old, and none of them had ever seen what a real reactor looked like, so they could only start from making a 'horse manure paper' engineering model and use dozens of hand-cranked computers to perform numerical calculations." Zhang Zuoyi, dean of tsinghua university's institute of nuclear research, said.
"At that time, the scientific research conditions in the house were difficult, and the living facilities outside the house were also backward. In Huyu Village, Changping District, where the experimental base is located, in the wasteland on the outskirts of Beijing, teachers and students can only set up tents and live in mountain temples, and usually in addition to scientific research, they also have to pull electricity to build houses. At that time, 'No. 200' was circulating a joke of 'two or two slopes'. Xu Jingming, former party secretary of tsinghua university's institute of nuclear research, said that at that time, from Tsinghuayuan to Huyu Village, it was necessary to take a train first, and then walk the Ten Mile Mountain Road, and teachers and students joked that the mountain road was "two or two slopes" - climbing a slope could digest two or two steamed buns.

Xu Jingming told reporters that under the extremely difficult external conditions at that time, the "23-and-a-half-year-old" team shouted out the heroic slogan of "using our hands to create the spring of the motherland's atomic energy industry". "In 1964, this young scientific research team built China's first self-research, design, commissioning and operation of the shielded test reactor."
According to reports, the Institute of Nuclear Research of Tsinghua University has joined hands with China's domestic nuclear industry and equipment manufacturing related enterprises to form a cooperation team for the integration of production, education and research. Up to now, with the joint efforts of the team, the construction of the 200 MW high-temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plant demonstration project located in Shidao Bay, Shandong Province, has been basically completed and has entered the final commissioning stage. The nuclear energy system has outstanding advantages in safe and efficient power generation, thermal application of high-temperature process, and nuclear hydrogen production.

Li Meng, vice minister of science and technology, said in his speech at the commemorative meeting that at present, China's energy demand pressure is large, energy supply constraints are many, and carrying out research on new nuclear energy technologies is of great significance to meet the national strategic needs, especially energy security, and support the long-term development of China's economy and society.
