Today in History: The Demon King on the G String (05-29)

Galgame is sometimes not accepted by the average player, the biggest reason is because the script is not attractive enough. Mediocre school life and multiple facially heavily faced heroines make up the game, all the player has to do is click the mouse wildly, do a few indifferent multiple-choice questions when appropriate, and then head to one of the multiple endings. If you haven't been satisfied with the plot yet, try a different route and collect all the CGs... Such works are not in the minority, so many people will have a resistance after trying Galgame. I think that's why "The Devil on the G String" is considered by a lot of people to be a "masterpiece of the pit". It's still a video novel in terms of gameplay system, but the beautiful CG graphics, proper music and voice acting, and excellent game plot make it easy for players to accept, which will make people intuitively appreciate the charm of Galgame. Launched by AKABEiSOFT2 and first released on a PC platform on May 29, 2008, the script was run by るーすぼーい (known as Screws in China), which is one of his most famous works.

Today in History: The Demon King on the G String (05-29)

"The Demon King on the G String" is no different from the general harem to ADV in terms of character configuration, the player takes the male protagonist as the main point of view, and several other female characters each represent a route in the game, so the newcomer players who know the text adventure class Galgame through this game will not have any deviation from the understanding of this traditional genre. The male protagonist of the game is named Kyosuke Asai, his brother was killed when he was a child, and his father was framed and owed a huge amount of money and was imprisoned for killing fraudsters, and Kyosuke could only rely on his mother with a high amount of debt. But he was later adopted by a loan shark gangster, Kenzo Asai, and has since lived a different life: going to school during the day and working part-time as his adoptive father at night, living alone in a luxury apartment. Because of his previous encounters, Kyosuke also regards money as the most important thing in life. However, when he came into contact with several heroines and found that everyone around him was threatened by the "Demon King" lurking in the city, he gradually changed his mind.

Unlike the average Galgame, the lines that enter each heroine in the game are not the favorability points accumulated in the options before settlement at a later point in time, or developed in tree branches through key options. The plot of the game has a strong sense of passage, and the male protagonist and the first female protagonist Usami Haru will have several confrontations with the Demon King. Each case corresponds to a female protagonist, and if the key option is triggered in the corresponding case, the plot direction will directly enter the female protagonist branch corresponding to the current case. That is, if you want to see the main plot of the game (Usamiharu Route), you can only abandon the route of all the other heroines before.

This design brings a small problem, that is, the first heroine route, that is, the so-called main line plot is much more exciting than other lines, which is almost all the recognized problems of the game's players. Some lines are not so exciting, and The true ending line of Usami Haru is complete and too touching, so if you don't attack the first heroine, this game is equivalent to white play, and maybe screws just want to write this line.

At the beginning, I talked about the shortcomings, that is, so that I could later exaggerate the other features of this work. I think the outstanding feature of "The Demon King on the G String" lies in three points, one is that the game setting is not conventional, detached from ordinary school life, and focuses on the confrontation between the hero and heroine with excellent wisdom and the "Demon King". The story moves reasonably and unexpectedly, and the slightly narrative script is extremely satisfying to the player. "Not insulting player intelligence" is, in my opinion, the most important quality of a good Galgame. Secondly, the game ends up telling a story of pure love with a fiery atmosphere, although it is a 18-year-old game, but the meat selling ingredient is purely icing on the cake, when the player sees the choice made by Kyosuke at the end of the story, the plot eight years after the end is really touching. The third point is that the game's soundtrack is relatively high-end, and the title "The Demon King on the G String", in addition to hinting at the plot related to the "Demon King", also represents another detail: the male protagonist likes classical music very much, and his favorite song is "Aria on the G String". Therefore, a large number of the soundtracks in this work are adapted from classical music, and there are more than thirty tracks quoted. These soundtracks are also perfectly integrated with the plot.

Doesn't seem to be exaggerated? No way, how wonderful the script really needs to be experienced by the player himself. Just like introducing the plot of Ever17 to others is tantamount to pitting him, "The Demon King on the G String" is not too explosive (really), but it is also a bit of a meaning. The game won the Galgame Of the Year Award, The Gold Award for Best Screenplay, the Gold Award for Best Graphics, the Gold Award for Favorite Player Support, and the Silver Award for Best Theme Song at the Pretty Girl Game Award 2008. Such achievements can also explain some of the strength of this work.

If you like this work, you can also try the game "Sunflower Girl in the Land of Wheels", also written by Screw and developed by AKABEiSOFT2. These two works have certain similarities, and players in the circle often compare them together, so I don't know much about them. But if you haven't played The Demon on the G String yet, find a time to experience it. The game is available on Steam and is released by the Sekai Project, and is currently only available in English, although you can patch the Chinese in the comments section. It should be noted that this game has two versions on Steam, dubbed and unsubscripted, don't buy it wrong.
