The VR building block game Cubism will update the Hand Tracking Passthrou

The new Cubism update coming next month will add support for using passthrough as the game background on Quest 2, while also having a fun visual that allows your hand to appear in front of virtual objects.

Cubism was one of the first games to try using the Passthrough API in August, but due to unresolved bugs in OpenXR's hand tracking implementation, it didn't support hand tracking at the time. This new update, which will arrive next month, supports hand tracking and uses some tricks to sell visuals.

Most games that implement penetrating APIs don't let you "see" your real hands in the environment. For example, Blaston places a subtle black circle around your hand and controller, placing the game's virtual hand on top.

Cubism, however, allows you to see your hands correctly at all times, even if they are in front of or behind any object in the game. You can see this action in the video above.

Often, such tricks can also deform your hands, thanks to the way the images are penetrated built from Quest's cameras (which is also part of the reason for the black circle solutions in other games). According to the developer's comments on Reddit, Cubism circumvents this problem by applying a faint outline of your virtual hand to a perspective image. The game also uses selective perspective on those objects as your hand passes through the objects in the game, which makes your hand always visible on the assets in the game.

Cubism can now serve Meta Quest and PC VR via Steam and Oculus, with a penetrating update for Quest 2 early next month.
