Recently, the news of the discovery of nearly 60 tombs in Hengzhigang, Guangzhou has aroused people's attention, according to the Guangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, at present, 57 tombs have been cleared, including tombs from 6 dynasties from the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Since the 1950s, archaeologists have cooperated with construction projects near Hengzhigang to carry out dozens of rescue archaeological exploration and excavation work, cleaned up nearly a thousand tombs from the Western Han Dynasty to the Ming and Qing dynasties, and unearthed a large number of cultural relics.

From July to December 2019, in order to cooperate with the construction of the landscape improvement project of the south entrance of Luhu Park and other nodes, the archaeological department was required to conduct preliminary archaeological investigation and exploration of the construction scope of the project, and the result of the exploration was that there were ancient tombs underground, and after obtaining the consent of the higher authorities, the local cultural relics department launched a rescue archaeological excavation of the ancient tombs. At present, 57 tombs have been cleared, including 11 Han Dynasty burials, 13 Jinnan Dynasty tombs, 2 Tang tombs, 1 Song tomb, 5 Ming tombs and 25 Qing tombs, and nearly 500 cultural relics such as bronze, iron, pottery and beads have been excavated. According to archaeological experts, the distribution of ancient tombs found in this archaeological exploration is very dense, and the phenomenon of late tombs breaking early tombs is frequent.

According to archaeological experts, among the more than 50 ancient tombs that have been cleaned up, the Han tombs and the tombs of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Southern Dynasty are concentrated, numerous and large-scale. The tombs of the Han Dynasty are all vertical cave wooden tombs, and at the end of the year, from the late Western Han Dynasty to the Eastern Han Dynasty, the tombs are well preserved, and the burial utensils are abundant, mostly pottery, in addition to copper swords, bronze mirrors and copper coins. The tombs of the Eastern Jin Dynasty are generally large in scale, exquisite in knots, and the decoration of the tomb bricks is regular, although many of them have been stolen and disturbed, they still leave a batch of blue-glazed porcelain and talc pigs and other utensils. The tomb bricks of one of the tombs have the chronology of "Daxing Four Years", which provides an important yardstick for the study of the eastern Jin Dynasty tombs in Guangzhou. In addition, the dragon mirror with handle excavated from the Song Tomb is also a fine product of archaeological discoveries in Guangzhou in recent years.

According to experts, the geographical environment of the tomb group site is relatively superior, in the northeast suburbs of the ancient city of Guangzhou, about 3 kilometers away from the urban area, which has always been the key burial area for ancient tombs. Because the place is a small hill, the terrain is relatively high, and next to the small river, feng shui is very good, so the tombs in history are concentrated in this place, and the era span is about 2000 years before and after. Experts said that the archaeological excavation enriched the history of Guangzhou and provided information for the historical research of Guangzhou.
