Introduction to Richard Phillips and appreciation of his works

Richard Phillips

Richard Phillips was born in Marbur in 1962 and lives and works in New York, USA.

Can't it be said that painting has said everything it can say?

Richard Phillips certainly doesn't think so. However, he did not go on to paint stupidly, but began to paint according to this problem.

Pop artists Andy Warhol and Melramos are the artists he mainly refers to, not only in terms of style and subject matter, but also because he also questions the status and role of images.

In 2006, in the exhibition entitled "Michael Fred", the paintings that initially presented Phillips's representative theme – soft erotic images derived from the essence of Pop art formed the basis of many of his paintings.

However, the way the exhibition is arranged is centered on highlighting his critical approach to painting. As in churches, painting gathers in groups around a portrait of michael Fred, an influential art critic of very different styles.

In this way, a firm theoretical posture is incorporated into his painting installations. (Fred's artistic view focuses on how paintings can shed light on the power of images that people overlook in their daily lives.) )

Phillips slyly places the portraits of the artistic authority Fred in the context of his work, thus fulfilling the need for criticism. In the optimistic way these images are expressed, they do not seem to subvert the theme of pornography.

However, in terms of themes, they should be attributed to "lower art", a form of doubt that would hardly please Fred.

Phillips' work "The Girl Who Smokes" (2008) takes his art one step further. The elegant smoothness of the surface hides the emptiness of the image content, and at the same time gives this emptiness an appropriate reason.

In this way, painting continues to grow, violently and at the same time self-critical.
