《The Crimson Petal and the White》

("Crimson Snow Petals")

The popular British drama "Crimson Snow White Petals" is adapted from Michel Faber's best-selling novel of the same name, just like the style of British dramas in the past: short and superb, only four episodes.

The eponymous series was produced by the BBC and is very faithful to the original. However, the introduction to the novel is very small, and the Treehouse Subtitle Group reprints an introduction article for everyone here, hoping to facilitate readers to have a better understanding of it.

From the first act, the opium smell and fat powder that pervade the series have screened out its audience. This is destined to be a heavy taste drama, the Victorian era black curtain falls, the cold and depressed characters appear, and the restless lust under the lace lace skirt is like a wave after wave pushing humanity to a dead end. Insidiousness, lust, revenge, gothic laying out makes this BBC-just produced 4-episode miniseries in the first half of the year present a state of high concentration of spirits.

Who is most likely to be its audience? Maybe it's goth fans, Dickens fans, and women.

The BBC's familiarity with classical drama makes it easy for the series to capture the charm of the original novel. Michel Faber's 835-page novel of the same name, published in 2002, tirelessly depicts the desires and contradictions of all classes, thus peeling back the truth of the dark tide of the times. Although the TV series cannot be as meticulous as a novel, it knows how to draw the audience's attention to a mixture of poetry and viciousness. The British are undoubtedly masters of shooting this kind of classical drama, full of literary and dramatic, and the speculation of the characters and plot is also delicate and in place - even if it is impossible to realistically restore the history, it still maintains a full sense of artistic tone.

The heroine of "Crimson Snow Petals" Sugar is a talented dusty woman who writes revenge novels with malice towards the world and men, "This is a book of revenge, used to take revenge on all the little reptiles who climb the threshold of Mrs. Castaway (the brothel bustard)." However, the fierce love affair with the perfume maker gave Sugar the opportunity to climb to a higher position in the strict class system. The ambitious and loving literary woman has matured the growing female consciousness in her body in the self-questioning of "who am I" over and over again. She successfully seized the opportunity to change her fate, bid farewell to the dark and smelly Yanliu Lane, and became the tutor of the daughter of a rich businessman.

This was originally a story of making a deal with desire, but wearing the self-righteous love mask of the male and female protagonists. Rich businessmen redeem the fallen angel with love, pluck out the thorns from her body, and raise her into a canary. However, there is another hidden feeling behind the warmth.

Another clue in the story is that Sugar meets his trance-like wife, Agnes, a well-spoken lady with tears in her eyes more than once sending a distress signal to Sugar, evoking all the pity in her heart. In that dark age, women's plight was similar: Sugar was 13 years old and fell into the dust of a phrase "There is a gentleman who wants to warm your bed"; Agnes was forced to undergo compulsory treatment by her husband and doctors as mentally ill, and both of them were almost trapped in their own quagmire, which also made it easier for them to feel sorry for each other.

As a result, the roles are changed: Sugar, far away from the party, helps Agnes successfully run away from home, and Agnes alone faces the uncertain future of the new world. Sugar's fate also fell into the clichés of the women of that era - the rich businessman could not identify with Sugar's status as a hostess, and she was no longer the little beast full of hatred in the brothel who lost in the face of love. When she returns to the life of an ordinary woman, she also inherits the emotions and weaknesses of ordinary women. The female feelings that sang triumphant songs before were nothing more than the selfish desires of little women in the face of the huge torrent of the times. Freedom, liberation, these words are only suitable for Sugar's novel, which has always been unfinished, and the vigorous fighting power can only be stimulated in dirty corners. Beautiful manors, soft beds, and idyllic life eventually unraveled Sugar's innate malice.

It wasn't until he was trampled on again that the hatred in Sugar was ignited again. In the final scene, Sugar, who has been kicked out of the house by a wealthy merchant, abducts the rich merchant's daughter and flees to another city. The howling wind blew away the manuscript of the revenge novel in her hand. The manuscripts flying in the sky were like countless snow-white petals, and she had no time to pick them up, so she could only continue to hurry.

Scattered manuscripts and forgotten hatred are the beginning of the road to revenge.
