Movie Synopsis: The film tells a little-known story. In 1933, an ambitious young Welsh journalist, Gareth Jones, traveled to the Soviet Union and discovered the appalling reality of the communist utopian myth. He began a routine news investigation, but attempts to unearth the truth about the famine in Ukraine under the cover of the government soon turned into a life-and-death quest.
His efforts were thwarted not only by Soviet censorship, but also by Western journalists who had a crush on Stalin's regime, most notably Walter Duranty, then editor-in-chief of The New York Times' Moscow division.
In real life, Jones was the first journalist to report on the Soviet Famine of 1932-1933 in western media. But because many intellectuals were sympathetic to Soviet power, his reports were not popular. Duranti, who concealed the facts of the Holodomor at the time, has since drawn criticism, and his Pulitzer Prize for his continued coverage of the Soviet Union was called by The New York Times as "Guilty With an Explanation."
