On December 18, Beijing time, the rocket team's official website announced that they had converted the two-way contract of guard Matthews into a standard NBA contract and signed a two-way contract with development league guard Quinn. In addition, in order to free up the contract place, striker Danuel House has been cut.
Matthews, 25, an NBA draft pick who spent the previous two seasons with the Wizards, averaged 5.5 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. Matthews played for the Greens this summer but was eventually cut over contract issues. The Rockets then claimed Matthews and made their Rockets debut against the Grizzlies on Nov. 17.
This season, Matthews has made 16 appearances for the Rockets, starting 11 of them. Matthews averaged 28.8 minutes per game and had 12.3 points and 3.5 rebounds. From Nov. 27 to Dec. 13, he scored in double figures in nine consecutive games, two of which exceeded 20, while helping Houston to a 7-2 record.
According to Rockets reporter Jonathan Fagan, the team and Matthews reached a four-year, $8.2 million contract, with salaries of $2 million for the first three seasons, $2.2 million for the fourth season, and non-guaranteed contracts for the last three seasons.
After signing Matthews, the Rockets signed a two-way contract with development league guard Quinn. Quinn, a graduate of New Mexico State University, played four games for the Lakers in this year's preseason, but ultimately failed to stay on. Quinn then joined the G-League Vipers, averaging 22.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.6 three-pointers per game. With his outstanding performance, Quinn eventually got a two-way contract with the Rockets.
As for House, he joined the Rockets in November 2018 and played in 154 games for the team, averaging 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Because it was a contract year, the Rockets chose to lay him off and let him find a new team on his own.
