On December 18, as one of shenzhen's "top ten cultural facilities in the new era", the Bay Area Book City officially started construction, and after its completion, it will become the largest book city cultural complex in the country.
As an important measure for Shenzhen to promote the "one district, one book city" planning, as well as a key project to build a "global reading model city for all", Bay Area Book City is a new generation of big book city built by Shenzhen Publishing Group after Shenzhen Book City Luohu City, Nanshan City, Central City, Bao'an City, Longgang City and Longhua City, and is also one of Shenzhen's "Top Ten Cultural Facilities in the New Era", which will become a landmark public cultural facility in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and a major cultural and sports project for the benefit of the city.
The "Eye of the Bay Area" radiates the Greater Bay Area
Bay Area Book City is located on the east side of the central green axis of Bao'an Central District, and is known as the "Eye of the Bay Area" because of its design concept of double jade plates.
The project covers an area of 66,000 square meters, creating a model that combines a book city and a folklore museum, with a construction area of 131,000 square meters, a height of 12 meters, and two floors above ground and two floors underground.
The space includes theme bookstores, Bay Area Folk Customs Hall, curatorial spaces, cultural exchange platforms, public reading, parent-child activity experiences, theaters, etc., to create a composite multicultural service platform integrating knowledge growth, cultural release, art and culture exhibitions, and science and technology innovation displays.
With a total investment of about RMB2.3 billion, the project is scheduled to be completed in December 2024 and open in 2025, with the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Construction and Public Works responsible for project management. After the completion of the project, it is expected to hold more than 800 cultural activities a year and receive an average of more than 10 million readers per year.
With knowledge service as the core, the Bay Area Book City takes the promotion of reading for all the people and the cohesion of the cultural identity of the Greater Bay Area as the main purpose, and takes the quality of cultural life as the direction, implements digital intelligent operation, community bookstore layout, label community construction and other format innovations, and creates a composite multicultural service platform integrating knowledge growth, cultural release, art and culture exhibition, and science and technology innovation display.
Among them, the Bay Area Folklore Museum, as an important part of the Bay Area Book City, is an international living public welfare cultural venue that inherits the excellent traditional Chinese culture, displays the folklore of Lingnan and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and integrates display and experience, research and inheritance. The Bay Area Book City and Folklore Museum are an important platform for cultural exchanges and cultural radiation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, which is of great significance for condensing the cultural identity of the Greater Bay Area, serving Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, shaping the humanistic spirit of the Bay Area, building the spiritual homeland of the Bay Area, promoting Chinese culture to go out and expanding the international influence of Chinese culture.
"Meandering Waters" creates a poetic cultural experience
In terms of design concept, the Bay Area Book City adopts the pattern of "round place in the sky" to promote the natural integration and symbiosis of the city. Adhering to the green and ecological design concept, Bay Area Book City integrates with the central green axis of Bao'an District to form a unique design style.
Eye of the Bay Area: The Bay Area Book City project takes the "jade disk" as the design concept, and the shape of the book city and the folk museum stands on it in two circles, as if two warm jade disks, echoing the square building Bao'an District Library and Bao'an Youth Palace on the other side of the central green axis of Bao'an Central District, and the "Eye of the Bay Area" is about to come out. The overall pattern of "heavenly round place" is formed, which constitutes a living space with a strong cultural atmosphere and provides citizens with a multi-faceted and diversified cultural experience.
Book City in the Park: The Bay Area Book City adopts the design strategy of "opening up the building", the open design connects the underground and aboveground space, and the experience of visiting the book city can be freely switched indoors and outdoors, which is the book city in the park and the park in the book city. Here, architecture is the city, and the city is loaded into nature, and the cultural experience never closes.
Curved Water Flow: The interior space of the Bay Area Book City building draws on the "QuShui Flow" to connect the reading paths, while the stairs and ramps are designed as "Book Mountain" and "Jade Belt" to create a poetic cultural experience.

In terms of business formats, Bay Area Book City will lead the cultural development of the Bay Area with knowledge dissemination as its vision, take books as the soul, extend multiculturalism, create an immersive cultural world, fit the characteristics of Shenzhen city, create a continuous self-iteration of cultural renewal field, and innovate all-round formats and immersive cultural experiences.
